Job overview

We are looking for a newly or recently qualified Speech & Language Therapist with an interest in adults with acquired communication and swallowing problems. The work is with in-patients; stroke rehabilitation and other specialist areas at the Freeman Hospital and possibly RVI & Community as required.

Our candidate will enjoy team work and a varied and challenging caseload.

You will be well supported through induction and on-going professional development by an expert and friendly team. Dysphagia competency development will be a priority.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage a caseload of adults in the in-patient setting
  • To assess communication and swallowing problems
  • To set up care plans for patients with communication and / or swallowing problems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To work alongside more experienced Speech & Language Therapists in providing a specialised service to patients with acquired neurological communication and swallowing problems at the Freeman.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of communication and swallowing disorders in adults Familiarity with a range of assessments and therapeutic approaches for adults
Desirable criteria
  • Audit and research principles

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess communication disorders
  • Awareness of dysphagia management
  • Basic teaching, training and presentation skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good organisation and time management skills
  • Basic computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • Dysphagia assessment skills
  • Computer skills to an advanced level

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Undergraduate or previous speech and language therapy experience including work with an adult caseload
  • Some experience of working with teams
  • Experience of communication aids
Desirable criteria
  • Previous work experience with adults

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Registered with Health Professions Council
  • Licence to Practice from RCSLT
  • Undergraduate dysphagia modules

  • Previous work experience with dysphagia
