Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to offer a Specialist Nurse role within the Capsule Endoscopy and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) team for Gastroenterology. This is a unique opportunity for personal and professional development, enhancing gastrointestinal knowledge and skills and includes gaining accreditation on completion of the wireless capsule reading course for small bowel capsule procedures. Depending on experience and the successful completion of a comprehensive training programme, progression to a Band 7 will be given within 12 months.  

We are looking for an experienced Nurse Specialist who has excellent communication skills, has the willingness to learn new skills and can work effectively autonomously as well as part of a large multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to complete the online/virtual Wireless Capsule Reading Course and on completion, the role will include

  • Triage and establish suitability of patients referred for small bowel capsule endoscopy
  • Run Nurse Led clinics which will include pre-assessment and consenting patients for the procedure 
  • Work closely with the Consultant Capsule and Nurse Lead to establish patient pathways for timely outcomes dependent on capsule endoscopy findings
  • Set up, download, and interpret results (with the appropriate training) 
  • Support the established Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nursing team in the delivery of care and support to Gastroenterology patients (with support from the established Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse Specialist team)
  • Support the Nurse Led Gastroenterology team and champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Covering the Freeman and Royal Victoria Infirmary sites and working alongside the Consultant Capsule Endoscopy Lead, and the established Gastroenterology Nurse Specialists, you will enjoy supporting patients through the pathway for small bowel Capsule Endoscopy.  There are opportunities to support the delivery of the established Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse led service and the role also includes gaining management skills when caring for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. 

Time management and organisation of a patient caseload are essential skills. Significant interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and wireless capsule endoscopy are necessary. The role requires a good underpinning knowledge and experience of IT. Training will be provided for the management of the Capsule Endoscopy software.

  • • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • • Current NMC registration

  • • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
  • • Extensive post registration experience, some of which will be at a senior level within the required specialist area of practice
  • • Extended clinical practice underpinned by training and assessment
  • • Audit / research experience
  • • Evidence of on-going continuous professional development
  • • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
