Job overview

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join The Major Trauma Rehabilitation Service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and motivated to deliver high standards of Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention to patients admitted following trauma.  Working as part of the MDT, primarily on the Major Trauma Rehabilitation Unit – a dedicated 10 bedded unit providing Level 2b specialist rehabilitation to patients following traumatic injury. 

The post holder will commence and complete Rehabilitation Prescriptions for patients within the Major Trauma Centre who are admitted following traumatic injury.  They will provide Occupational Therapy input on the Major Trauma Rehabilitation unit, and lead consultations to review patients in the Major Trauma Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic ~8 weeks post discharge from the Major Trauma Rehabilitation Unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work with the Major Trauma MDT to provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to patients with non-complex, complex and highly complex needs within specialty.

They will require excellent communication skills, high-level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement. 

The role requires the ability to complete functional and standardized assessments, provide appropriate treatment interventions, and where clinically indicated assess and provide equipment and adaptations, carry out Environmental and Home Assessment visits, discharge planning and on-going referrals.

They will work with a complex in-patient caseload, act as key worker to advocate for designated patients during their inpatient stay, complete rehabilitation prescriptions, carry out key worker follow up telephone reviews and review discharged patients within the major trauma out-patient clinic. 

Being able to work both independently as an autonomous practitioner, and as part of a team is essential for this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We would welcome candidates with experience of delivering specialist rehabilitation for patients with complex musculoskeletal and / or neurological injuries.  The successful candidate will work as part of an MDT consisting of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dietetics, speech and language therapists, Social work and Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine.

There will be a requirement to supervise junior staff, deliver in-service training, and partake in clinical audit and service development.

The Major Trauma Rehabilitation Service is 365 days a year service.  The post has late shift, weekend and bank holiday commitment.

  • To provide a high standard of occupational therapy care to non-complex, complex and highly complex patients within specialty evidencing high-level problem solving, reasoning skills and independence of judgement.
  • The as Advanced OT will be a highly specialist practitioner and is the clinical lead for the Occupational Therapy Service within specialty providing highly specialist knowledge within the Trust and externally to therapists and other health care professionals from secondary and primary care across the region.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • In-depth clinical knowledge of medical/neurological, conditions and their effect on occupational performance (master’s level equivalent)
  • Highly developed understanding of OT process within acute setting
  • In-depth knowledge of health and social care policy, risk assessment and management
  • Extensive knowledge of a range of disability equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of eligibility criteria and procedures/policies relevant to disability equipment, minor housing adaptations
  • Highly specialist knowledge of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment
  • Excellent understanding of professional ethics and their application into practice
  • Good knowledge of clinical governance
  • Evidence of CPD
