Job overview

We are looking for a pro-active Assistant Accountant to join our skilled, friendly and enthusiastic Finance team at Newcastle Hospitals Charity. You will work to maintain and develop the financial accountancy service to the Newcastle Hospitals Charity, and help to develop and improve existing processes.

Main duties of the job

  • Contributes to the production and monitoring of charity finance, including cash book and bank reconciliations, journal creation, and coding of expenditure and payment of expenditure.
  • Inputting financial data into the general ledger, databases and spreadsheets with speed and accuracy is a routine duty.
  • The maintenance, development and review of working practices and procedures in relation to Charitable Funds.
  • Liaise with various disciplines of staff to investigate and resolve any queries and provide advice and education in relation to Charitable Funds.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The maintenance and development of a financial accountancy service to the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • A good level of education and/or experience in a role focused on a numerate subject
  • NVQ level 4 or technician level of Association of Accounting Technician or progress towards a professional accountancy (CCAB) qualification or equivalent experience OR equivalent experience working at this level

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the Finance Department of a busy organisation
  • A good working knowledge of financial computer systems
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS Finance experience
  • Show the ability to supervise junior staff
  • ICDL or equivalent experience.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand legislation in relation to charity finances
  • Able to communicate information to a range of different audiences using a range of different communication methods
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team to ensure strict deadlines are adhered to
