Job overview

NMC Registered Children’s Nurse’s are employed in wards and departments at the Great North Children’s Hospital, Neonates at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Cardiothoracic at the  Freeman Hospital.

We are welcoming applications from student nurses due to qualify in or before September 2024 and qualified Children’s Nurses looking for a new experience.

When you arrive for interview we will ask for your preferences and provide a list of current vacancies to assist in your choice. This year we are offering a selection of rotational posts through 3 different ward/departments based on your preferences. If you are interested please express this when we meet you at interview. Some candidates will prefer a post in one fixed area and this is available too.  

 Vacancies are constantly changing but currently there are opportunities on Ward 1a Renal, Gastroenterology and pre/post BMT, Ward 2a Respiratory, Ward 2b Medical Day Unit, Ward 3 Bone Marrow Transplant, Ward 4 Oncology, Ward 7 Renal Day Unit, Ward 9 General Surgery, Ward 10 Trauma and Orthopaedics, Ward 12 PICU, Ward 14 Oncology Day Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care, Ward 23 Cardiology and Cardiothoracic PICU. There is also a vacancy in Dermatology Outpatients that is 18 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

We want all of our Paediatric Nurses here at Newcastle Hospitals to feel supported and have opportunities for learning and development.

Our Education Team is here to help and will support:

The Trust Preceptorship Days for all newly qualified Band 5 staff nurses (4 days).

Bespoke paediatric clinical skills day – this includes 6 days over a 6 month period.

Bespoke speciality days including – tracheostomy care, respiratory, diabetes, acute illness management, orthopaedic care and wound care.

Clinical Educator support in the clinical area during supernumerary period and once out of supernumerary to support with competency sign ogg.

Yearly mandatory training update dates.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality patient care in the Peri-Operative environment.
  • Provide effective support to both patient and carers throughout their care pathway.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes
    To abide by Trust policies and procedures.
  • Provide support for and depending on experience deputise for nurse in charge in their absence.
  • Act as patient advocate in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code / Health and Care Professions Council standards of conduct, performance and ethics.
  • Work collaboratively as an effective member of MDT.
  • Participate in 24 hour on call service when appropriate to role.

  • • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development
  • • Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context
  • • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
Desirable criteria
  • • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for mentorship if relevant to role

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty e.g. cannulation, IV drug administration

EXPERIENCE

  • • Relevant and recent clinical experience

QUALIFICATIONS

  • • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • • NMC registration
