Job overview
The ability of the Trust to accurately record and code its clinical activity is fundamental to the Trust’s income recovery and understanding the quality of its clinical services.
- The post holder will be responsible for validating all activity across clinical specialties reviewing patient notes to optimise HRG and Tariff for the trust.
- Develop and maintain relationships with all levels of NHS Staff providing them with expert Clinical Coding knowledge as required
- Expert knowledge of National Clinical Coding Standards and medical terminology across all areas of activity at UHCW
- Attend meetings with all levels of stakeholders and effectively communicate relevant coding issues when addressing issues of clinical documentation in relation to Clinical Coding
- The working patterns for this role are 37.5 hours, Monday to Friday between the hours of 0800-1600 or 0900-1700. This post has a requirement for 4 days per week on site working.

Main duties of the job
- Lead responsibility validating patient activity across specialities as well as feedback to both clinical staff and the Clinical Coding team leading to an improvement of HRG and Tariff generation for UHCW
- Support Head of Clinical Coding and Data Quality in optimisation of any processes around how activity is coded and liaising with relevant stakeholders to assess, implement and measure improvement
- Review Clinical documentation and provide expert Clinical Coding support to Surgical Services in documentation improvement projects
- Work closely with lead clinicians within their respective areas, to ensure that Group level clinical content is accurate, standardised and is reflective of modern healthcare systems
- Receive and review complex clinical information and translate the documentation into a case study for training uses

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Policy development
- Support Head of Clinical Coding and Data Quality in creating procedures around coding of activities at UHCW
- Promote best practices with regard Clinical Documentation
- Attend any relevant stakeholder meetings in support of the Head of Clinical Coding and Data Quality
- Identify the need for and lead on the development of any other departmental or Trust policies
- Help the Clinical Coding management team in training and support of Clinical Coding team members regarding clinical activity
Communication
- Ability to resolve clinical coding queries, some of which may be complex and cross several work areas
- Experience of working with other stakeholders both internal and external to the organisation
- Full understanding of computer systems, including Microsoft Office and the ability to apply knowledge to develop an understanding of using e-learning software
- Work effectively with clinical coding staff to highlight areas of learning and improvement
- Keep an up-to-date live reporting tool working with Commissioning to track any HRG/Tariff improvemen
Performance
- Lead the Clinical Coding Validation programme
- Drive improvement in HRG/Tariff
- Demonstrate good interpersonal and presentation skills
- Support and train staff working towards any Clinical Coding qualifications such as the ACC
- Support Head of Clinical Coding & Data Quality in implementation of any applicable Local Policy’s Management
- Ability to manage, train and support Clinical Coders
- Ability to support Senior management team in their absence
- Support the Head of Clinical Coding and Data Quality as required
