Job overview

This is an exciting time to join the team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust – one of the largest teaching Trusts in the UK, as we redesign and transform dermatology services across the area. Our service provides General and Specialist Dermatology for adults and children including skin cancer, patch testing for allergies, joint MDT clinics for Rheumatology, Oncology, Plastics and Genital Dermatology and Histopathology.

We are developing pathways with the local community dermatology service, expanding our Teledermatology provision and also aim to expand our advice and guidance and e-referral system. Our long term ambition is to develop a dermatology hub for specialist provisions including the development of a Mohs surgical unit.

Main duties of the job

The consultant dermatologist will work with the dermatology team to provide a comprehensive clinical service for patients. The dermatology service at UHCW is delivered across 3 sites , primarily at University Hospital (Coventry) but also at George Eliot Hospital (Nuneaton) and Hospital of St Cross (Rugby). This post will support the general dermatological service with  clinical sessions based at George Eliot Hospital and Rugby St Cross, with occasional sessions at University Hospital as and when required.

This post will join a team of seven other Consultants in the Dermatology Unit providing in-patient and out-patient services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post will join a team of seven other Consultants in the Dermatology Unit providing in-patient and out-patient services.

They will take ongoing responsibility for patients under his/her care, providing a consultation service and advisory service to clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.

Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.

All consultants are required to demonstrate active participation in Clinical Professional Development.

 As a University Teaching Hospital, the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching.

Participate in the development of the Dermatology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of Dermatological conditions.

Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.

  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice.  Understanding of the Clinical Governance process  Competent in basic information technology  Clinical and sub-specialty experience/qualifications

  • Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others.  Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.  Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines.  Ability to manage and lead clinical team.  Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors.  Awareness of health service reforms and issues across all healthcare economy

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to continuing medical education.  Ability to organise and participate in and evidence of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students.  Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures and techniques to other health care professionals.

Research, Audit & Clinical Governance

  • To be able to undertake complete audit cycle.  Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit.  Participated in completed clinical research projects.  Knowledge of clinical governance issues  Interest and awareness of research  methodology
