Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join our expanding advanced practice workforce within Emergency Medicine.  If you are enthusiastic, and  passionate about acute medicine and looking for career progression, this could be the role for you. The successful candidate will work under clinical supervision to meet specific speciality capabilities and competencies alongside successful completion of MSc in Advanced Practice, progressing to a Band 8a.

The post holder is an experienced healthcare professional able to undertake a Masters programme in Advanced Clinical Practice, who will work as a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) within the emergency medicine footprint. The tACP will assess non-elective patients including initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care with clinical supervision from senior clinicians; a Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner/ Consultant Nurses/ educational supervisor. The tACP should be directly or indirectly supervised at all times until their competence has been assessed by the group ACP faculty. They will demonstrate safe clinical decision-making and expert care, for patients providing appropriate clinical management plans and prescription of any medication required. 

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process. They will work collaboratively with the emergency medicine teams to meet the needs of patients, and will play a key role in service delivery and adherence to policy and procedures. They will also be instrumental in guiding junior medical and nursing staff in relation to relevant protocols and procedures.

The post holder will be required to work within all areas of emergency medicine. This includes the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent and emergency care, undertaking primary and secondary assessments alongside medical colleagues, providing support and guidance to nursing and medical staff in the management of the patients within emergency medicine medicine. They will work alongside medical, nursing and multi-disciplinary colleagues in the management of these patients providing support, guidance and advice as required. 

The post holder will be required to ensure evidence based care is delivered to patients and will be involved in audit of practice, research and service improvement.

Following completion of the MSC in advanced practice including the non-medical prescribing module, Individual competence and capability will be met in order to achieve a satisfactory level of competency evidenced by a successful ACAT assessment. Upon completion of these requirements the trainee will progress to band 8a.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
•    Co-ordinate the care of patients throughout their pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients. 
•    Accountable for own actions in accordance with their professional regulatory body requirements.
•    Will contribute to delivering corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times. 
•    Lead and deliver care across a variety of clinical settings such as outpatient, inpatient, virtual clinic, ward rounds, etc.
•    Deliver clinical care according to national and local guidelines ensuring delivery of evidence-based care and working towards the Trust vision of providing a World Class Service. 
•    Assess and prioritise patients within the service to maintain quality care.
•    Undertake an initial assessment to determine differential diagnosis, utilising advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior clinical colleagues.
•    Act autonomously, dependent upon capabilities and level of supervision, to provide expert clinical care which contributes to the patients’ treatment plan to ensure that optimum physical, psychological, and social care needs are met.
•    Request and interpret relevant investigations to facilitate the development of the patient’s management plan.
•    Initiate the management of patients who are critically ill or deteriorating within scope of practice.
