Glaucoma Ophthalmic Technician

Job overview
We are looking to expand our current Glaucoma Ophthalmic Technician team within the department to support a busy and well reputable ophthalmic department.
Main responsibilities are to assist the multidisciplinary team to provide an efficient and effective ophthalmic service. Duties include performing various ophthalmic investigations including visual field and acuity testing, eye pressure check which assesses the visual function of patients attending the eye clinic. The role also includes ocular imaging, supporting the day to day clinic activity within the Glaucoma department and leading the technician-led clinic independently. A key element is to assist medical teams in providing gold standard patient care. The role involves meeting and interacting with patients in a friendly and professional manner.

Main duties of the job
- To carry out Humphrey Visual Field testing to a high standard, ensuring the individual needs of patients are met, maintaining the patients’ dignity and privacy, acting in the patients' best interests at all times.
- Testing and recording of visual acuity.
- Instillation of eye drops following completing a competency course under supervision of the medical staff.
- Taking images using the Ocular Coherence Tomographer (OCT) and Non Mydriatic Fundus imaging.
- To carry out such basic procedures as are delegated by trained members of staff and which have been taught, subsequently supervised and in which the ophthalmic technician has proved him or herself competent. These may include ORA, Icare, pachymetry, measurement of glasses using the focimeter and measuring a patient’s refractive status using an auto refractor.
- To assist the acute and outpatient clinical teams with emergency patients, including setting/ clearing up the department. This will include flexible working days with both long and short shifts and cross - site working within the eye department at UHCW and St Cross Hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To participate in skills training and assessment prior to undertaking additional roles.
- To be aware of developments in ophthalmology and to undergo further training as required by Charge Nurse.
- To attend in-service training and support meetings where provided. Participation in clinical governance meetings
- To care for and be responsible for the maintenance of equipment used within the Outpatient clinic including Humphrey Visual Field Analyser data transfer and imaging (OCT) machine.
- To adhere to the provisions in the Health and Safety at Work Act and to work within the guidelines of hospital policies and procedures.
- To be aware of and comply with, the fire policy and procedures for control of infection.
- To maintain confidentiality of patients and their relatives at all times.
- To participate in performance review and agree objectives for continuous development.
