Clinical Vascular Scientist

Job overview

The key role of the Vascular Scientist will be to work independently performing, interpreting and reporting a range of highly specialised diagnostic investigations including Doppler blood flow analysis for Vascular Surgery and other specialities within the UCHW and surrounding hospitals that we offer a service for. 

The post holder will participate in research, trials and clinical audit. The post holder will be responsible for training junior members of staff and assisting with managerial duties directed by the head of department. The post holder will also contribute towards departmental commitments for training external staff.

As a post holder you will be expected to provide scientific, technical and clinical advice and service to other sites served by the department. 

The post holder is required:- to plan own workload, organise projects and prioritise requests; to adapt schedules (several times a day) in response to unpredictable urgent requests and to discuss highly complex aspects of patient treatment/outcome with medical staff, scientists, nurses and the head of department. 

The department operates 7 days a week, with weekend shifts scheduled on a rotational basis among team members, and all employees are required to contribute to weekend coverage.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  • Independently perform, by means of a Colour Doppler Ultrasound Unit and other specialised equipment, a comprehensive range of highly specialised diagnostic duplex ultrasound scans, including carotid, upper and lower limb arterial duplex scans and intracranial cerebral blood flow measurements and temporal scans on patients. 
  • Perform non-imaging investigations such as invasive and non-invasive physiological pressure measurements. 
  • Undertake intra-operative and immediate post-operative transcranial monitoring, alerting the vascular surgeons of critical adverse events.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Adjust and tailor the scope of the investigation depending on the patient’s symptoms and/or pathology found during the course of the investigation. 
  • Discuss complex technical issues with medical and other staff. This will include advising the clinicians of any limitations that may affect the accuracy of the requested investigation and, where appropriate, recommend alternative diagnostic imaging techniques or modalities. 
  • Clearly communicate the nature of, and reasons for, the investigation to the patient. 
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and communicate directly with other health professionals, in particular vascular surgeons, diagnostic information directly relevant to the patient’s management. 
  • Understand the potential hazards and bio-effects of Doppler Ultrasound and be aware of national and international safety guidelines. 
  • Participate in clinical and scientific research, and medical trials. 
  • Contribute towards the training of junior staff including trainees, scientists, technologists and other staff from both within the Trust and externally.
  • Assist with scheduling patient appointments. Adapting work plans in response to urgent requests or extended procedures such as those influencing operating theatre times. 
  • Be actively involved in the development of departmental policies and procedures. Together with the Vascular Ultrasound team implement strategies that impact work both within and outside the department.
