Paediatric Clinical Sister / Charge Nurse

Job overview

To provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill and high-dependency children and young people within the Paediatric HDU/Level 2 Critical Care environment.

The post holder will work as an experienced clinical practitioner and provide effective leadership and supervision to the nursing team, ensuring safe, effective and child- and family-centred care. They will act as a role model for junior staff and support the Band 7/ward leadership team in maintaining high standards of clinical practice, patient safety and service delivery.

The post holder will demonstrate an ability to recognise and respond promptly to the deteriorating child, prioritise workload, coordinate the clinical area and escalate concerns appropriately.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

A shift/team leader, providing clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the department. The post-holder will deputise for the department manager as required.

Our level 2 Paediatric high dependency unit comprises of 6 beds in the summer, 8 beds in the winter. You will care for babies, children and young people with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions.

The successful applicant will after training be expected to hold the Paediatric bleep supporting the unit, attending medical emergencies as well as supporting with Bed Management responsibilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  • Assist in the audit of service delivery, communicate findings with others, and assist in ensuring that identified scope for improvement is implemented.
  • Designated shift Co-ordinator. Ensure appropriate support to junior team members. Management of workload on each shift, ensuring appropriate allocation of duties. Oversight for ensuring management, supervision, and support to staff to ensure coordination of clinical activities.
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of patients and provision of nursing interventions to maintain and improve the health and welfare of patients in all areas of the Paediatric Unit
  • Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate. This includes assisting with the operational Co-ordination of the Paediatric Unit including out of hours bed capacity management, safer staffing, and Paediatric Bleep holder responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, assessment and appraisal as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • First level degree • Evidence of continuous professional development • Teaching and Assessing Qualification or willingness to undertake • Current NMC Professional registration RSCN/RN Child • Study at level 6 (degree/ diploma) • HDU Qualification • Completion on European Advanced Life Support (EPALS) training
Desirable criteria
  • • CPI trained or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Professional post registration clinical experience in a high dependency setting. • Ability to successfully manage people and change • Appropriate experience in management of reported incidents including investigation using Datix or similar system • Experience of conflict management and complaints
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience in HR and Management Related Issues • Resource Management • Experience in maintaining safe staffing and management of sickness/absence.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence based practice • A sound knowledge of professional policies and procedures • Knowledge of clinical governance & a commitment to clinical supervision and staff development
Desirable criteria
  • • A good understanding of current issues relating to the NHS. • Experience in Policy/Service Development
