We have a fantastic position available for a Biomedical Assistant / Associate Practitioner within our Point of Care Testing (POCT) team, part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services network.

About the Role: This full-time role offers the chance to work in a dynamic environment, with potential weekend and Bank Holiday shifts to meet the needs of our service. Our network spans across University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire, George Eliot Hospital, South Warwick Foundation Trust, and several smaller external locations. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across these sites, gaining diverse experience and contributing to high-quality patient care.

What We're Looking For: We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to thrive under pressure. If you are computer literate and have some medical background knowledge, that's a plus! However, don't worry if you don't – we provide comprehensive training on laboratory software and techniques.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  • Collaborate with the POCT manager to support the daily management of the POCT service across the CWPS network.
  • Ensure the quality of service while enhancing patient and user experience.
  • Work towards meeting all prescribed national standards for the service, including key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Provide technical support to the Point of Care Section and Biomedical Scientists within the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the POCT service. To prioritise and plan own workload, communicate with the team and direct lower grades of staff as required. 
  • To be responsible for the quality management of their service; reporting, investigating and actioning all non-conformities, clinical adverse events and service user complaints. To inform line managers of these issues as they arise.
  • Communicate directly with colleagues and other external contacts, and act as the second point of contact for challenging phone calls and face-to-face enquiries where more demanding enquiries are made. Calls/face-to-face enquiries to be dealt with in a professional manner and may require tact and persuasive skills. 
  • To work as a team with the other network supervisors and participate in network POCT meetings to share best practice and deliver a standardised network wide POCT service. 
  •  Maintain and troubleshoot a range of POCT equipment in several different areas of the Trust and external sites. 
  • Assist the POCT manager in implementing an External Quality Assurance (EQA) scheme for POCT devices. This will include preparation and distribution of EQA material for analysis, inputting and collation of EQA data through web-based software. 
  • Manage POCT data management systems and associated data bases. 
  • Issuing and troubleshooting operator barcodes.
  • Responsible for ensuring that stocks of consumables are adequate for the provision of the POCT service 
  • Responsible for ensuring all staff work within Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and policies and participates in the review and update of these SOPs where necessary. 
  • Update Quality Management Systems and clinical incident reporting systems and carry out audits as required. 
  • Responsible for all maintenance and that record keeping is up to date, ensuring all equipment is kept in a clean and tidy condition, precautions are taken to ensure safe operation, including reporting of faults and servicing.
