Job overview

Are you a highly skilled sonographer with specialist expertise in gynaecology? UHCW is offering an exciting opportunity to join our consultant-led team as a senior clinical specialist. You’ll lead service development, scan and report autonomously, and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of gynaecological ultrasound care.

We are looking for either a Qualified Sonographer or a Trainee Nurse Sonographer. Banding will be dependent on Experience, if unable to recruit a band 7 Qualified Sonographer, a Trainee Nurse Sonographer will be considered. If offered a band 6 post, Training would take up to 2 years before progressing to a band 7 position upon.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The role requires individual accountability for independently performing and reporting routine and complex ultrasound examinations within the Gynaecology specialism in accordance with the departmental guidelines and relevant professional body's code of conduct. 

The post holder will act as a resource for this across the Gynaecology department including Gynae Clinics (scan clinic) by providing high quality care and support to women accessing these services with the support of the extended nurse specialist team for gynaecology.

Working closely with the Lead Consultant of Emergency Gynaecology service, Gynaecology Ward and Gynae Clinics, the post holder will ensure the delivery of evidence-based care throughout the unit ensuring that patients receive the necessary care and treatment to enable progress along an agreed pathway of care, working towards and within NHS targets. This will be achieved through the application of specialist knowledge, skills and practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ability to exercise judgement when dealing with patient enquiries, analyse and resolve patient problems. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to establish and maintain relationships and gain the co-operation of others. This includes medical staff, other healthcare professionals, patients and relatives.
  • Maintain effective relationships and have regular communication with ultrasound team, Consultants, administrative staff and Senior Management within Gynaecology
  • Ability to undertake training and achieve agreed level of competency in the use of IT applications required in the department.
  • The physical skills required to perform a range of ultrasound examinations including excellent hand-eye co-ordination. Essential sensory skills would be sight, hearing, and touch. In addition, the need for dexterity, manipulation, accuracy and keyboard skills.
  • Be able to communicate to a broad range of individuals in a professional and caring manner including those whose first language is not English, or who may, for whatever reason, have difficulty understanding. These individuals include patients, visitors, clinical, technical and other staff.
  • Exercise judgement and initiative based on acquired experience and knowledge to address both clinical and management issues.
  • Build and promote interprofessional understanding and networks with peers and colleagues.
  • Prioritise workload pertaining to urgency of ultrasound referrals, including inpatient scans.
  • To professionally and legally take responsibility for providing a high standard of clinical care and patient welfare, and supporting other staff to do likewise.
  • Provide a ‘patient focused’ approach to imaging, ensuring that patient needs are met in a timely, professional and efficient manner
