Trainee Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) to recruit a Trainee Consultant Radiographer within Breast Imaging. UHCW is one of the largest and busiest NHS teaching trusts in the country with two hospitals caring for over 1,000,000 people from across Warwickshire and beyond.

The Trust has 2 main hospital sites: University Hospital in Coventry (UHCW) and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby (STX).

The post-holder will be supported to work towards acquiring a Masters level qualification in Breast Imaging. Candidates will need to hold Postgraduate qualifications in a minimum of two elements of Advanced Practice, such as Image Interpretation, Breast Ultrasound and/ or Stereotactic Interventional procedures. There is a requirement for the candidate to have significant post registration experience, be HCPC state-registered and hold the Certificate of Competence or Postgraduate Award in Mammography.  Willingness to work 37.5 hrs over 5 days is also an essential requirement. The post will be primarily based at the University Hospital site, but upon qualifying, all Consultant Radiographers are expected to rotate through George Eliot Hospital (GEH) offering support to the symptomatic service. 

A full UK driving license is essential for this post. Please note that an international driving license is not accepted.

Main duties of the job

The Trust combines a number of key roles:

District general hospital services for Coventry and Rugby, our local population

The Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry Breast screening service

It is a tertiary centre for Coventry and Warwickshire, providing complex specialist services for the region and beyond

Major Trauma Centre (Level 1)

 All medical specialities including renal transplantation, and a major Oncology Centre (Arden Cancer Centre) are also located on the University Hospital site.

Clinical base for the University of Warwick Medical School

Every year the Trust provides more than 800,000 episodes of care to patients from across Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. The Breast Imaging Unit at UHCW provides a fully integrated screening and symptomatic clinical service.

The post holder will acquire the skills and educational achievements to work towards becoming an expert practitioner. Other aspects of work in line with other three pillars of advanced practice will be referred to comprising of professional leadership and consultancy, education and training and practice development, research and audit evaluation.  

Candidates will be appointed at Band 8a and will have the opportunity to progress directly to Band 8c, subject to meeting the required Band 8c competencies. Please note that this progression pathway does not include Band 8b, and advancement will be based on demonstrated capability and performance aligned with Band 8c expectations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will learn to become competent in all aspects of breast imaging and image guided intervention. The main responsibility is to support and extend existing breast imaging services, which includes screening, symptomatic work and regional breast MDTs.  The appointed candidate will join the existing breast team which comprises of 4.3 WTE consultant radiologists, 4 qualified consultant radiographers and 6 advanced practitioners.

The post holder will be required to work flexibly to meet the needs of the expanding service, which may include evenings and weekend working. A minimum of 70% of time is to be worked in clinical practice alongside patients and staff. 

  • Learning to prioritise and assess complex cases for both the screening and assessment arms of the service, communicating recommendations and results to the wider team.
  • Working towards becoming an autonomous practitioner with interventional procedures. 
  • Leaning to write comprehensive report both symptomatic and surveillance mammograms, advising further assessment where necessary, and to participate in arbitration and other screen reading related audit activities. 
  • Working towards full Interpretation of breast tomosynthesis.
  • Under supervision, to provide accurate and informative documentation within radiology reports, complying with information governance.
  • Respond to any questions or concerns from patients, clients and visitors professionally and with confidence.
  • The post-holder will be a core member of the Multi- Disciplinary Team and work in collaboration with members to influence the patient care pathway. The post holder will support the MDT in delivering patient care, particularly with regards to imaging findings, ensuring sound clinical and ethical decision making in relation to breast diagnosis.
  • The candidate will participate in regular multi-disciplinary meetings presenting both their own and colleague's caseload will be expected.
  • Learn to provide expert professional advice to medical consultants, multi-disciplinary groups, patients and their carers.
  • Lead on projects and other work to ensure competency is maintained in all four areas of the pillars of practice.
