Job overview

·         We are pleased to to recruit a post of Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with expertise in Complex Trauma with an  interest in Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust.

·         The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the management of complex orthopaedic trauma, including major trauma cases, as well as contributing to the delivery of a high-quality primary hip and knee arthroplasty service. The post-holder will participate fully in the consultant on-call rota and support the continued development of trauma and elective services within the department.

Main duties of the job

     The appointee will contribute to the training, supervision, and mentorship of junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals, and to provide expert advice and support to consultant colleagues.

·         The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at UHCW has experienced a sustained increase in both trauma workload and elective referrals. In order to meet service demands, maintain compliance with national targets including the 18-week referral-to-treatment pathway, and support ambulatory and major trauma pathways, the Trust is seeking to strengthen its consultant workforce.

Qualifications & Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Completion of a recognised Fellowship in Lower Limb Surgery with a focus on Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and complex trauma.
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS or equivalent certification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Fellowship-level training and demonstrable experience in primary hip and knee arthroplasty.
  • Significant experience in orthopaedic trauma, including management of: o Peri-prosthetic fractures o Complex fractures o General trauma workload
  • Ability to contribute safely and independently to the general trauma service
  • Experience and enthusiasm for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
  • Sound understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, and quality assurance
  • Competence in the use of information technology systems relevant to clinical practice

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Broad-based clinical expertise across both elective and emergency orthopaedics
  • Appropriate level of senior clinical experience, equivalent to Consultant or Senior Registrar grade
  • Substantial operative experience in orthopaedic trauma surgery, including complex case management
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary consultant team
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in service development or service improvement initiatives
  • Experience in leading or contributing to a Neck of Femur (NOF) service
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, and implement new clinical pathways or services

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the importance of clinical leadership and management within an NHS setting
  • Ability to manage, supervise, and lead a multidisciplinary clinical team
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of relevant management or leadership courses
  • Experience contributing to rota management, job planning, or departmental administration

Audit, Research and Publications

Essential criteria
  • Experience in conducting and participating in clinical audit
  • Awareness of and commitment to evidence-based clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in leading or organising audit projects
  • Participation in relevant research activities
  • Authorship or co-authorship of peer-reviewed publications
