The aim of the post is to streamline the patient pathway to ensure rapid access to diagnostic imaging for all patients on a cancer pathway. The intention is to provide an imaging appointment on or as close as possible to the request date of the examination. The coordinator will then ensure the examination is reported as soon as possible following test, the target being seven days from request to report. This will require any possible delays to be highlighted and if necessary escalated to the Imaging Service Manager and Clinical Lead.

Main duties of the job

  • To use knowledge of national cancer waiting times targets and specialist knowledge to co-ordinate and manage the patient diagnostic pathway. This will include:
    • Reduce and maintain elements of cancer 62 day pathway by delivering rapid access to either diagnostic Imaging tests/results or appointments for 62 day pathway patients across the Trust.
    • To liaise with clinical specialities and cancer trackers to ensure the diagnostic imaging is efficiently planned and organised around the patient pathway to enable the 62 day target for treatment to be met.
    • Facilitate service improvement to streamline the patient journey and improve the quality of patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide weekly 62 day pathway specific diagnostic waiting list information to enable all clinical teams to be fully informed of specific Imaging waits.
  • To act as Radiology’s Cancer Co-ordinator pulling patients through all cancer specialities, helping facilitate 7-day turnaround and reducing diagnostic waits. As Co-ordinator, you will support the above activities and optimising turnaround time within Radiology and 62-day RTT pathways.
  • To liaise with clinical specialities and cancer trackers to ensure the diagnostic imaging is efficiently planned and organised around the patient pathway to ensure the 62-day target for treatment can be met.
  • To use specialist knowledge of the patient pathway to ensure any possible blocks to timely diagnostic imaging are eliminated or minimised.
  • Liaise with key contacts regarding enquiries from internal and external sources to resolve any problems, queries or complaints where appropriate.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of education up to GCSE or Level (A-C) standard
  • NVQ level 3 in Business Administration or Customer Service; or demonstrable relevant experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of booking all radiological examinations, including patient preparations or equivalent similar experience
  • Specialist knowledge of cancer pathways 2 week wait.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of RIS and PACS

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of Radiology systems and Somerset register
  • Ability to schedule radiological examinations, taking into account radiologist, radiographers and sonographers rota
  • Highly developed communication skills; provide, receive and negotiate complex information where persuasive, motivational or reassurance skills are required
  • Prioritise and work independently

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to empathise with patients, relatives or carers’ who may have concerns regarding examinations
  • Ability to support, train and coach other staff members
  • Ability to work as part of a team
