  • The main duty of the post holder is to provide a portering service to the Emergency Department, support patient transfers to the wards and to carry out routine ADHOC duties – supporting with department deliveries. 
  • Liaising with the nurse in charge of emergency department and operational teams

Shift Pattern - 13 x 11.5 hours shifts every 4 weeks. Shift times are 07:30-20:00 and 11:30-00:00

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a portering service to the Emergency Department. To escort and convey patients by wheelchair, bed or trolley.
  • Transfer patients to wards, x-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, MRI and Endoscopy
  • To assist with the movement of patients using clinical manual handling procedures including pat slides and log rolling techniques. To use reasonable judgement when preparing to move a patient and check with clinical staff if unsure.
  • To transfer various specimens of blood to the pathology department.
  • Transport and collect pathology specimens, containers and units of blood ensuring records of collection is logged. Transport all items in accordance with safe handling techniques.
  • To deliver and collect prescriptions from pharmacy.
  • Fetch blood from blood bank.
  • To assist in cardiac arrests.
  • To transport records to wards with patients on transfers
  • To report any suspicious incidents and assist where necessary.
  • Support nurse in charge and operational team where required.
  • Attend mandatory training courses which include moving and handling, resuscitation, infection control, clinical governance, fire training, dealing with conflict training, pat slide training and log role training.
  • Operate a communications device to keep in touch with other staff in the department.
  • To assist with pat slides in the department, wards and CYT.
  • To assist with log roles in the department and CT.
