An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic ODP to cover the anaesthetic service in Interventional Radiology here at GEH.
The post is 7.5hrs per week and will be to cover cases on Thursdays only. This will include a mixture of vascular and non-vascular procedures involving Scrub, Anaesthetics and Recovery.
Main duties of the job
The position requires working in a small multidisciplinary team of Radiographers, Consultant Radiologists, Assistant Practitioners and Radiology Department Assistants. The role includes working as scrub assistant for sterile interventional procedures and as a circulating practitioner for recording patients’ observations, administration of drugs, managing patient care and providing expertise in anaesthetics and post-operative recovery.
The role will involve working closely with the current IR team to provide highly specialised patient care for patients undergoing angiography, angioplasty, and other diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The successful candidate is also expected to participate in enhanced practice, with a Radiographer led PICC service which commenced in 2022, and other extended scope services planned.
Providing relevant data for audit may also be required, as will being responsible for ordering of routine and ad-hoc stock and undertaking audits within IR, presenting findings at the UEC governance meetings.The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm and team working ability, as well as being able to establish and maintain good working relationships with the IR team and wider department, directorate and hospital. You will have good communication skills, be flexible and self-motivated.
The prospective candidate will be working with a state-of-the-art Philips Azurion Gen 3, which opened in June 2025.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide specialist care and support to all patients and users of the Radiology service primarily within interventional radiology (elective and emergency procedures) ensuring dignity and privacy
- To ensure the maintenance of a high quality patient focussed care at all times through the effective leadership, management of staff and resources
- To provide effective leadership and to act as a good role model, working with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family
- To provide supervision, support and education to qualified and unqualified staff
- To promote the role of the operating department practitioner
- To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of patient care
- To liaise and work closely with the person taking continuing responsibility for the IR suite

- Cannulation/Vascular access skills
Qualification(s) and Professional Training

- BSc or DipHE in Operating Department Practice
- Evidence of CPD
- Certificate of competence in administering intravenous injections or equivalent
- Registration with the HCPC
