Main duties of the job

  • To undertake training or additional training as identified by the requirements of the Trust.
  • To undertake regular foot patrols of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust in general and the Accident and Emergency Department in particular in order to :
    • Deter criminal activity against Trust property , staff, patients and visitors
    • Deter criminal activity against Trust property , staff, patients and visitors
    • Reassure staff , patients and visitors that there is a security presence
    • Detect resolve and report security breaches such as insecure buildings , departments etc
    • Detect and resolve and report Health and Safety hazards
    • Detect, resolve and report fire hazards e.g. blocked fire exits escape routes
    • Provide routing assistance and guidance to patients and visitors
    • Enforcement of all Trust policies and procedures

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide emergency response to incidents on Trust premises to protect the safety for all staff  patients and visitors from acts of violence or aggression and to protect Trust and staff property Incidents include and are not restricted to:
    • Assaults on staf
    • Fighting between patients and visitor
    • Assisting police and prison service with violent prisoners on hospital premise
    • Public order
    • Verbal abusive and threatening behaviour
    • Threat with weapons
    • Theft
    • Criminal damage
    • Burglar
    • Arson
    • Car Crime
    • Fire incidents including liaison with the fire brigade
    • Removing  trespassers from the hospital premise
    • Infant abduction
    • Bomb threats
    • Major Incidents
    • Firearms (real and imitation )

Dealing with any of the above with people who may:

  • Be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other substances misuse
  • Be suffering from mental health illness, learning difficulties , trauma, adverse reaction to medication, clinical conditions affecting ability to be responsible for their own actions, shock, bereavement 
  • Be in the act of committing  crime and need to be apprehended and detained until the police arrive 
  • Be unhappy angry  with treatment provided (or lack of it) by the organisation or by the conduct of the staff
  • Have no right to be on the Trust premises and may need to be persuaded to leave or physically removed from the Trust premises 
  • Provide covert and overt security presence for wards and departments where there is advance warning of potentially violent behaviour by staff patients and visitors on the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust premises in the event that staff are unable to deal with conflict
  • To provide assistance to the Mental Health Liaison Nurse specifically in the Accident and Emergency but also throughout the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust with regard to possible violent patients awaiting assessment or sectioning under the Mental Health Act
  • To carry out lock ups of nominated buildings at the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust at night and to unlock on the morning, ensure that the main entrances are secure at night sand weekends in accordance with local procedures   
  • To work within the security control room to direct other officers in response to incidents on site , calls for assistance and to operate radio communications system, requests for entry (through main doors) to monitor and respond to intruder alarm and personal alarm  response (pinpoint) and to ensure that appropriate responses are made

To operate the CCTV system with due regard to:

  • Code of Practice and procedures
  • Understanding surveillance and individual roles
  • Evidence and the law in relation to digital and video recordings
  • Human rights and civil liberties
  • Data Protection Act 1998
  • Local knowledge
  • Confidentiality , accountability and privac

The post holder will operate the body worn camera in all calls for assistance to include but are not restricted to:

  • Incidents of verbal abuse
  • Incidents of Physical aggression
  • Persons attempting suicide of self-harm (mental health concerns )
  • Car crime
  • Issuing enforcement notices on motor vehicles for  car parking issues
  • Incidents of potential child protection issues
  • Non-compliance with the Trust No smoking policy
  • Suspicious people

To respond to intruder alarm systems activations in buildings and departments in order to:

  • Investigate cause of intruder alarm activation internal and external search of premises
  • If false alarm to reset the alarm and secure the building
  • If any signs of intruders in building to call the police and await for arrival
  • If the building is empty but has been burgled or subject to criminal damage call the police and preserve the scene of crime
  • To obtain authorisation to call out on call department staff and engineers to make good any damage and to secure the building - department as far as reasonable practical
  • To provide a report to the Local Security Management Specialist/Deputy Facilities Manage

To ensure all control room records are maintained and follow up actions are carried out as necessary

To liaise with the local Police as required including:

  • Preservation of crime scene
  • Handing over detained suspects and briefing police officers with regard to alleged crimes

  • Collation of evidence including CCTV and body worn camera evidence

 

  • To assist in the prevention of loss of property through physical  patrols and CCTV monitoring and carry out preliminary investigations into the loss of property belonging to the Trust, their staff, patients and visitors
  • To participate in the contingency plans in place for internal and external emergencies
  • To ensure that all security faults are reported to the Team Leader – Portering and Security supervisor
  • To undertake monitoring of all Trust car parks issuing enforcement notices and ensuring free flow of traffic at all times.
  • Undertake proactive checks on staff and visitor car parks, ensuring staff permits are in date,
  • and checking there is no unauthorised parking.
  • To undertake routing and emergency portering duties when requested as determined by the LSMS, Deputy Facilities Manager or Team Leader

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working and communicating clearly with challenging patients/individuals with challenging behavior
  • Good organisational skills
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of security environment, the potential risks and threats
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability/approach to adapt to suit the needs of the person/situation
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working within a hospital / healthcare environment.

Qualifications and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • Basic Numeracy & Literacy Skills to Level 1 or equivalent
  • Basic IT Skills / Computer literate
Desirable criteria
  • Professional security qualifications or licence or minimum 2 years security industry experience
