Building Craftsperson (Carpenter)

Due to a re-organisation of the Estates Department there is a vacancy for a Carpenter (Building Craftsperson)

Hours - 37.5 hours per week

£26,488 (negotiable depending on experience)

Plus 27 days holiday, plus bank holidays and voluntary pension scheme.

The role is Monday- Friday with opportunities for overtime and weekend working, plus participation of an emergency on call rota. 

Start and finishing times 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. 

The SWFTCS Estates Department provides a comprehensive maintenance repair and installation service of building, grounds, engineering services and associated equipment throughout the SWFT Trust.

Main duties of the job

To work within established maintenance policies and procedures across a range of disciplines, e.g. Carpentry, building, roofing, glazing etc. with minimal supervision. To carry out new work or undertake new production appropriate to their original trade using relevant instruments and machinery without supervision. This may include the manufacture, assembly, erection and installation of new work using own initiative, experience and judgement

The company provides a number of services such as outpatient pharmacy facilities at Warwick and Stratford and Nuneaton hospitals; estates and facilities management at Stratford hospital, Acorn House and Lillington Health Hub; private patient service and consultancy services to NHS Trusts.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Technical/Operational

Repair, maintenance, fault finding and installation of items such as structural timbering, automated door systems, internal and external fixtures and fittings and furniture across all South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust sites and properties, as directed by the Multi-skilled supervisor.

Interpret and work from all instructions, drawings and specifications appropriate to the relevant trade, manufacture, assemble, erect and install new work without supervision.

Service, test and diagnose faults on automatic fire doors and automated door systems, communicating technical issues to maintenance staff.

Effect temporary repairs/”make safe” works in emergency situations without supervision.

Undertake acceptance testing of new equipment.

Flexibility to participate in an emergency on-call system covering all properties maintained by the Trust as specified by the Multi-skilled supervisor, as required.

Communications/Organisational

Communicate technical issues to other maintenance staff and contractors; explain technical issues to junior members of the team and non-technical staff.

Plan and organise own workload on a day to day basis, with access to supervisor as required.

Train less experienced maintenance staff in using complex engineering plant and equipment and supervise maintenance assistants, checking and evaluating their work.

Co-ordinate the work of contractors and supervise the work of junior maintenance staff and contractors on a day to day basis. Use computerised CAFM system to record all hours and materials used for each work order.

To liaise with front line clinical staff to understand and communicate issues to complex engineering plant and equipment. To prioritize and plan own workload, taking responsibility for assessing and re-allocating duties in response to priority, in liaison with Supervisor.

Other

Undertake driving duties on a range of vehicles covered by a standard driving licence as and when required by the Multi-skilled supervisor.

Undertake such other appropriate duties and/or responsibilities as may be directed by the Multi-skilled supervisor.

Be prepared to learn new techniques and undertake any training deemed necessary in order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role.

Carry out duties and/or undertake responsibilities relating to health and safety in accordance with the Trust and departmental safety policies and procedures.

Have an understanding of the relationship of other crafts workers work relating to their own.

 Work constructively as part of the team, including the corporate and technical team.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Completion of a recognised City and Guilds craft certificate (or similar trade certificate) to vocational level 3.
  • Multi-skilled building qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant commercial & domestic trade experience
  • Demonstrate evidence of working processes in a highly regulated environment
  • Fault finding and installation.
  • Practical & theoretical experience in domestic, plus commercial industries.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills – able to communicate complex technical and safety information to other staff, contractors, patients
  • Able to work on own initiative.
  • Team player
  • Must have excellent IT skills
  • Good organisational skills – able to prioritise and work to deadlines
  • To effectively plan/schedule workloads from CAFM system – including Planned Maintenance & breakdowns
  • Analytical skills for complex problem solving, fault diagnosis, risk assessment of complex multifaceted equipment
