Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks

Many of the roles we advertise have a requirement for a DBS check to be carried out. If you are successful for a role and it requires a DBS check the Trust will carry out the initial check and subscription to the DBS Update Service, however successful candidates will be expected to cover the associated costs . Details of this will be sent to successful candidates in their offer letter.

Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Agile and Flexible Working

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. However, occasionally travel around Warwickshire and into your base will be required so access to your own transport would be helpful.

Job overview

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a enthusiastic Consultant in Neurological and Major Trauma Rehabilitation with relevant expertise. This is an ideal opportunity for a motivated Consultant to complement our clinical team. The post holder will provide clinical leadership to specialist therapy and nursing colleagues in facilitating both neurorehabilitation and PDOC pathways across C&W ensuring safe and effective clinical standards and patients’ outcomes and as part of the inter-disciplinary team providing clinical insight and management. This is a 10 PA jobs though applicants wishing to work more flexibly or job share are also encouraged to apply.  
SWUFT partners with University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) in providing neurological rehabilitation and major trauma rehabilitation at both UHCW and CERU sites. The two Trusts are seeking to appoint two new consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, with a special interest in neurorehabilitation and major trauma injuries, to replace the outgoing post holders.  Please note that the consultant job plans are currently under review.
Direct line management will be by Clinical Lead and General Manager. The post holder will have an office base in either the North or South Warwickshire, according to clinical commitments.

Main duties of the job

The Rehabilitation Department continues to develop and is made up of 4 Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine (CRM) of which this post is one and an Associate Specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine. 

It is expected that the candidate would be forward thinking and innovative in the delivery of the rehabilitation service, and to be capable of leading a highly experienced multidisciplinary team.

The department has a Clinical Director, who is supported by an Associate Clinical Professor of Research in Rehabilitation Medicine.
CERU has strong links with SWFT Learning and Development service, supporting medical students from the University of Buckingham and has close links with University of Warwick.

The Trust is highly supportive of the CERU’s National standing and has supported and invested extensively in the development process in achieving Level 1 national service status. As from April 2013 the specialist rehabilitation service at the Leamington Hospital CERU has been commissioned by NHS England.

CERU also provides services to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) principally supporting the region’s Major Trauma Pathway, assessments and referrals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Take ongoing responsibility for patients under his/her care
To be part of the Consultant of the week Rota across UHCW, CF and CERU
Provide consultation services and advisory services to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care
Participate in the development of the Neurorehabilitation service’s treatment protocols and guidelines and greater knowledge in the management of neurological conditions.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty. This may include the appraisals of the Senior Trust Specialist, SpR, Resident and/or Clinical research Fellows and Advanced Clinical Practitioners as and where appropriate.
Participate in the CRM non-resident on-call (NROC) Rota on an equal basis with consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided at the out-of-normal working hours. The on-call Rota is scheduled for one week, Monday to the following Monday. NROC can fluctuate from 1:4 to 1:5 depending on service needs.
To provide appropriate outpatient rehabilitation services and to provide consultation for General Practitioners and other colleagues.
To provide specialist consultant support in the outpatient department and the Community Rehabilitation Team along with other consultants within the department.
Develop and maintain good communications within Neurorehabilitation, the Neurosciences as well as General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.

  • MRCP/MRCS/FRCS or equivalent
  • Must be within 6 months or have completed CESR
  • To be on the specialist register in rehabilitation medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Research experience and/or higher qualifications
  • Publications in the field of Neurological Rehabilitation.
