Employer heading
Specialist Speech and Language Therapist
NHS AfC: Band 6
Come and join us
We’re looking for people who share our values of compassion, accountability and optimism to help us provide high quality care for the patients, carers, families and communities we serve. We specialise in NHS mental health and learning disability services and we’re proud to make a difference every day.
At SPFT we put people first. We’ll do everything possible to help you feel respected, valued and included. You’ll have opportunities to learn, grow and gain new experiences to support your career, with access to lifelong learning and professional development.
We actively promote flexible working and understand how important work life balance is, especially in healthcare. Whether it’s part time hours, hybrid working or flexible start and finish times, we’ll explore what works for you and the role.
We recognise that tools like AI are becoming part of everyday life and you may choose to use them when preparing your application. We welcome this, as long as what you submit reflects your own experience, skills and voice. AI can be helpful for structuring or refining your answers, but it should not replace your own examples or create content that isn’t based on your real experience.
Our recruitment process is designed to get to know you, and we’ll explore your examples further at interview, so it’s important your application genuinely represents what you bring. You can read more about using AI in applications and interviews on our recruitment process page.
We’re shaping a workplace where ideas are encouraged, technology supports you and everyone has a voice in how we improve. If that sounds like the kind of organisation you want to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.
Job overview
Join our specialist gender affirming voice therapy team and help people develop a voice that reflects their identity and personal goals. We are seeking an enthusiastic speech and language therapist to provide individual and group interventions within a supportive, innovative and inclusive service. You will manage a varied caseload, receive regular supervision from a highly specialist SLT, and work within a well-established multidisciplinary team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop specialist voice skills and make a meaningful difference to people's confidence, wellbeing and self-expression.
While direct experience in gender affirming voice therapy is desirable for this post, we recognise that opportunities to develop expertise within this specialist area can be limited. We therefore welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate transferable skills from other areas of speech and language therapy, as well as those with relevant experience in singing, music, voice acting, or other voice-related disciplines.
Training and support can be provided to suitably qualified applicants who demonstrate a commitment to the values and ethos of our service.
Applications for agile working will be considered

Working for our organisation
We are based at St Peter’s Health Centre in Brighton, conveniently located less than half a mile from Brighton Station—just a 10‑minute walk. You will have access to a purpose‑built, sound‑treated voice therapy room, with the flexibility to work both on site and from home.
We are committed to supporting flexible working and offer a range of options, including flexible hours, part‑time roles, job sharing, and hybrid working. Home working is well supported, with funded equipment provided to help you work comfortably and effectively.
At Sussex Gender Service, we are committed to building a diverse and representative workforce. We recognise that our current team is predominantly White British, and we are actively working to broaden this. We warmly welcome applications from people who are trans, non‑binary or intersex, and from those of Global Majority backgrounds.
We place a strong emphasis on staff wellbeing and development. You will be supported through regular supervision, annual appraisals, reflective practice sessions, and access to coaching and mentoring. Staff are also encouraged to connect through our eight staff networks, with protected time to attend meetings and events.
We are committed to creating an accessible working environment. We can provide equipment and software tailored to your needs, such as speech‑to‑text tools or ergonomic equipment and will support you to apply for additional funding where appropriate (i.e. Access to Work).
