Consultant Anaesthetist with a interest in Neuroanaesthesia

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

University Sussex Hospitals are looking for an outstanding Neuroanaesthetic consultant to join our team working in a fantastic area of the country. Our anaesthetic department is dynamic and has an excellent reputation for teaching, research and innovation for the benefit of our population. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to hone and expand their clinical skills in addition to developing services within University Hospitals Sussex and our partner organisations.

This is a new post, arising because of the expansion of neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology services provided by our relocation to the Louisa Martindale Building in 2023. It will expand the Neuroanaesthetic Team to 11 specialists providing anaesthesia for Neurosurgical, Spinal and Interventional Neuroradiology in the Trust’s new, state-of-the-art 3Ts Neurosciences Centre. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at both the Royal Sussex County and Worthing Hospital, both of which are just a few minutes walk from the beach. The Worthing department offers a broad range of general anaesthetic work including Obstetrics, Colorectal, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Urology.

Visiting our departments prior to interview is encouraged, and if unfamiliar with the hospital, contact with the clinical leads or clinical director prior to application would also be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, considerable experience in the delivery of anaesthesia for a wide range of intracranial, neuroradiological and spinal procedures is expected, as well as familiarity with the specialist monitoring these patients can require. As an expanding service, there are plenty of opportunities for leading service development and quality improvement projects and experience/enthusiasm for these areas would be welcomed.

We are large teaching department with an associated medical school so we expect all consultants to participate in the education and training of medical and non-medical colleagues. Those with a proven track record of delivering education to these groups will find plenty to occupy themselves.

Further details of the duties of the role can be obtained by contacting the clinical lead or clinical director.

We look forward to receiving your application and the start of your journey with UHSussex.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan will consist of neurosurgical, neuroradiological and/or spinal lists based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and flexible general lists at Worthing Hospital, depending on the interest and skill set of the successful individual. Each half day session is 5 hours (1.25 PA). The on call commitment is to the emergency neurosurgical service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, supported by 4 tiers of residents. Non-neurosurgical cases are covered by other on call consultant groups. The intensive care unit is staffed separately.

Participation in monthly department governance meetings and revalidation requirements will be included within the 1 SPA allocation of this post. In addition, there will be responsibilities for supervising and assessing specialist trainees and other members of the multi disciplinary team.

The post holder will have a commitment to teaching of both undergraduates and postgraduates and evidence of active participation in teaching.

When appointed to the Trust Consultants will be expected to work from any Trust site.
