Job overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a motivated and forward-thinking resident doctor to join our team as a Technology, Simulation and Digital Futures Fellow. This role is designed for a doctor at FY2+ level, equivalent or higher, with a strong interest in medical education, technology enhanced learning and simulation. The post is available for 12 months from August 2026.

This innovative fellowship post will have multiple foci including: evaluation of current trends in digital literacy, familiarity with technology enhanced learning methodology, the andragogy surrounding virtual reality, augmented reality and generative artificial intelligence and the practical deployment of these new innovations to improve patient safety and both patient and workforce experience.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Medical Education for UHSussex, the Head of Simulation and Essential Clinical Skills and the Head of Knowledge, Libraries and Learning Technology to assess and improve on current levels of digital literacy, familiarity with technology enhanced learning and look at how virtual reality, augmented reality and generative artificial intelligence can be incorporated into educational activities for the workforce at UHSussex.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Work with the Knowledge and Libraries team to assess digital confidence among medical staff and deliver key learning activities to boost digital literacy.  The post-holder is expected to influence behaviours towards positive digital attitudes within the medical community and be a digital ambassador for UHSussex.
  • Appraise the current market and educational research in the use of virtual and augmented reality and generative artificial intelligence and their use in simulation and essential clinical skills training
  • Work with the simulation team to ensure that simulations use current operational platforms and are as digitally real to the working environment as possible
  • Work with the simulation team to integrate current technology enhanced learning and digital resources in deployment of education programs
  • Educate the educators on the most modern and effective technology enhanced learning strategies to support frontline teaching quality
  • Appraise the current levels of familiarity with digital education techniques among medical educators and the barriers and enablers to expanding technology enhanced learning in medical education.
  • Seek to capture educational needs assessments amongst different sections of the UHSussex educator and leadership communities
  • Evaluate the preferences of resident doctors and medical students in relation to the use of learning technologies, in order to make recommendations for development

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Technology, Simulation and Digital Futures Fellow at University Hospitals Sussex is a one-year post designed for a resident doctor (FY2+, equivalent or higher) with an interest in medical education, technology enhanced learning and simulation. The Fellow will lead on designing and implementing educational resources, simulation training, and gaining intelligence regarding the use of technology enhanced learning methodologies, and digital literacy. The fellow will also evaluate the andragogy of virtual reality, augmented reality and generative artificial intelligence for use in educational programs at UHSussex.

Working closely with the technology enhanced learning team, knowledge and libraries team and the simulation and essential clinical skills team the successful applicant will co-ordinate learning opportunities to improve staff’s digital literacy, educate educators on new trends in technology enhanced learning and evaluate the use of extended reality and artificial intelligence in simulation design. This portfolio of cutting edge skills will make a significant strategic contribution to the trust's workforce development plans. It offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in clinical leadership, educational design, and the transformation of a workforce from “analogue to digital”.

This fellowship is an excellent opportunity for a resident doctor, who is interested in developing their education portfolio, to significantly develop their management skills and understanding of educational methodologies utilised in medical education in a large, complex Trust. This post will allow the postholder to develop skills in project design, management, leadership, delivery and support of teaching programmes as well as project assessment. The role would be ideal for someone looking to explore a career in medical education and leadership.

The postholder will work across all sites but will be based for administrative purposes at the Royal Sussex County site.

  • Experience of teaching & training, including medical trainees, students of all healthcare disciplines and allied health professionals
