Job overview

The aim is to appoint a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest in faster diagnostic services / gynaecological oncology to join the established team at University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex). We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic colleague who will contribute towards the development of the gynaecological oncology faster diagnostic service over the next decade and beyond.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UHSussex spans across 4 sites – Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), Brighton, Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Haywards Heath, Worthing Hospital, Worthing & St Richards Hospital, Chichester and also includes satellite sites at Lewes Victoria Hospital, Lewes and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham by Sea.

This job will be predominantly based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, but will include some activity at other sites. Elective in-patient and day-case gynaecological surgery occurs predominantly at the PRH, whilst tertiary referral gynaecological oncology surgery takes place at the RSCH. Outpatient clinical activity occurs in both hospitals with the majority of outpatient activity being based at the newly opened gynaecology outpatient centre at PRH. Additional gynaecological outpatient and operating activity is undertaken at Lewes Victoria Hospital in Lewes and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham by Sea.

We are looking for a skilled and experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist with excellent skills and experience in managing complex and general gynaecological conditions including complex obstetric and gynaecological emergencies.

The candidate should have experience in laparoscopic and open abdominal surgery. Experience in ultrasound scanning, colposcopy and hysteroscopy are desirable.

Previous involvement in service development and quality & safety initiatives are also desirable.

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Run two week rule referral and general gynaecology outpatient clinics
  • Oversee the faster diagnostics service ensuring pathways are effective and efficient, meeting targets.
  • Develop a vulval clinic and vulvoscopy services
  • Undertake inpatient and day case theatre lists in general gynaecology
  • Participate in the regional gynae oncology MDT
  • To participate in the on call rota for obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Support the provision of safe obstetric and gynaecology on-call services.
  • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education and supervision including ATSM and SITM training.
  • To be actively involved in service development and innovation
  • To actively support and engage with ongoing research themes and projects
  • To contribute to complaint & incident management as well as clinical administration.
