Job overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with an interest in Pelvic and Acetabular trauma. The appointed candidate is expected to manage polytrauma and general adult trauma procedures at the Major Trauma Centre RSCH (Royal Sussex County Hospital), PRH (Princess Royal Hospital), and tertiary elective unit, Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC)  It is essential that they are able to treat all complex pelvic and acetabular fractures, elderly fragility fractures and have experience in primary and revision arthroplasty.

The on-call responsibility for this post will include participation in trauma cover during the week and a 1 in 16 polytrauma on call at the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) and 1 in 8 weekend cover of the fragility fracture list at PRH

The post holder will join the team of trauma and pelvic and acetabular surgeons and will be expected to undertake an array of trauma, elective and reconstructive procedures. They will form part of the trauma and arthroplasty MDT’s where there is the opportunity for discussing complex cases and concomitant learning opportunity

Main duties of the job

•    Undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care.
•    Work and support all members of the clinical team in theatres, clinics and wards.
•    Day to day management of patients, liaison with trauma nurse practitioners and participation in meetings.
•    Undertake and be up to date with mandatory training.
•    Observe the rules and policies together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
•    Ensure to maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
On Call Commitment: This includes participation in the trauma on call cover weekdays at the RSCH MTC site with off-site cover when on call and PRH NOF on call rota weekends (3% Category A ).

During the ward round week, after the ward round is complete (no afternoon session booked) there is no off site cover required.
The current job plan is provisional and the workload is spread across the 2 sites that covers the East side of UHS. The job should not require travel between the 2 sites on a given day.

Elective surgery is undertaken at the SOTC which is a wave 1 accredited HVLC Hub.

Experience/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • FRCS or its recognised equivalent
  • • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. • If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Trauma and Orthopaedics or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. • If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
Desirable criteria
  • • Higher Degree

Clinical Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Minimum of 6 months fellowship experience dedicated in pelvic and acetabular trauma
  • • Minimum of 6 months fellowship in allied subspeciality – trauma or hip arthroplasty
Desirable criteria
  • • Fellowship experience in young adult hip preservation
  • • Fellowship experience in revision hip arthroplasty

Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
