COVID-19 Vacancy Staff Nurse A&E

Western Sussex Hospitals is a leading acute hospital trust, with rewarding career opportunities for caring, committed and innovative people, who wish to be valued for their work and empowered to improve the services we provide. Here are few reasons to join us:

Outstanding – we are the first acute hospital trust to have received the health watchdog’s highest rating in all key inspection areas. (CQC October 2019)

Top 10 – Western Sussex Hospitals is one the best hospital trusts to work for, according to the NHS Staff Survey, and among the top ten trusts in England where staff are most likely to recommend the care their colleagues provide. (NHS Staff Survey 2018)

Leading organisation – Western Sussex Hospitals is led by NHS Chief Executive of the Year Dame Marianne Griffiths (HSJ Awards 2016 | No.1 HSJ Top CEO 2018 & 2019) and is renowned for outstanding care, excellent staff engagement, innovation and learning.

Location – our hospitals in Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea are on the beautiful Sussex coast, between the beach and South Downs National Park. West Sussex has wonderful countryside, picturesque villages, vibrant towns, excellent schools and cultural amenities, as well as quick transport links to Brighton, London and beyond.

More about us - Western Sussex is an acute trust with three hospitals; Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s in Chichester provide emergency, inpatient and outpatient care; and Southlands in Shoreham-by-Sea provides outpatient care and day surgery. Since April 2017, the senior leadership team has also managed neighbouring trust Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.

Patient First - in 2015 the trust’s Patient First programme was launched to empower colleagues to make lasting changes that benefit patients and to ensure we continue to improve patient care with lean management best practice at every level of the trust. Improvement huddles are just one example of extensive and ongoing cultural change that makes Western Sussex an exciting place to work. (Watch our video)

Have you ever wanted to try A&E but have been too afraid to try?

Do you love A&E but worry about long waits or busy departments?

Do you love spending time with your patients and having time to care?

Do you want to have time to nurse and time to do your job to the best of your ability?

Do you want to nurse in an environment where you can make a difference to patients every single day?

If so, then we have an exciting opportunity for you!

We are seeking to employ experienced Band 5 nurses to join our Emergency Department team at St Richards Hospital. We are part of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which is a trust that has been rated ‘Outstanding’ with the CQC, and where our staff survey results show that people love to work here!

St Richards A&E currently sees approximately 65,000 patients per year, with 25% of patients we see being children. We are a designated Trauma unit and have been rated as an "Outstanding Department" by the CQC. We have a robust Practice Development team with a strategic vision which is supported at director level. We are a receiving unit for Stroke calls and have trained our nurses to become specialist assessors for stroke thrombolysis and have demonstrated how the care we provide really impacts on patient outcomes.

Our Paediatric department lies within our main footprint and is staffed by senior paediatric nurses who have developed a rotation programme for staff with a specialist interest in developing their paediatric skills further and offer a potential rotation to the paediatric wards for career development. Our dedicated Paediatric Area provides a separate waiting area and playroom with 3 cubicles and further assessment and triage rooms and we have paediatric wards on site.

We have an 18 bedded majors with a view to develop and expand further and have recently upgraded our resuscitation area to manage the current pandemic along with development of a new Red Assessment area.

The Emergency department has undergone modernisation and a change in leadership, both nursing and medical and we are working towards new and exciting projects to improve patient flow. Western Sussex Hospitals aims to empower and develop staff through utilising the Patient First methodology and we would love to hear from enthusiastic, motivated nurses, with excellent communication skills and a vision for the future. This is a fast paced and at times challenging environment and can be hard work, however, being able to deliver great care is something we pride ourselves on and strive to deliver as a team.

Our Clinical Decision’s Unit has recently been refurbished and has four beds and four ambulatory chairs which enables us to maintain flow through the department and strong links with the Emergency Floor results in timely transfers and an improved patient experience.

We have the potential to offer permanent CDU nursing posts if you feel you would love to try A&E but want to take your time easing into the role. We have strong links with our mental health liaison service and are keen to hear from applicants with a special interest in Mental Health, or indeed, dual trained nurses.

We have an established induction and rotational programme designed to support and developing all nurses to become confident and effective Emergency Nurses with the opportunity to grow and flourish.

Applicants must have a minimum of 6 months acute hospital experience or equivalent front line experience and should be prepared to work a variety of shifts including internal rotation, weekends/nights and bank holidays. We currently have a shift pattern of 12.5hr days and nights.
