Job overview
This is a novel and exciting post that is available for six months, with the possibility of further extension. Our medical education team has recently embarked on an ambitious programme of change, with investment in its consultant resource, simulation technology and psychotherapy teaching. The post-holder will work closely with, Dr James Fallon, DME whilst joining a community adult team within East Sussex, a Neighbourhood Mental Health Team (NMHT)
The post will be split as follows:
- 80% of time will be spent in clinical practice. Full clinical supervision will be provided and the post-holder will be expected to work at the level appropriate to their experience and competency (i.e. at the level of a Higher Specialty Trainee).
- 20% of time will be spent supporting the medical education team with the development and delivery of postgraduate education. Duties are likely to include: co-facilitating seminars with more senior Psychiatrists, developing and organising learning materials, co-facilitating simulation sessions, assisting with virtual delivery of content, advising the senior leadership on new initiatives, providing additional support to trainees sitting the CASC and leading on their own educational project.
Main duties of the job
- Conduct psychiatric assessments and formulate differential diagnoses
- Develop management plans collaboratively with patients using a biopsychosocial approach
- Perform Mental State and Cognitive Examinations
- Undertake physical health assessments
- Participate in risk assessments and care planning
- Liaise with families, carers, and other professionals
- Refer patients appropriately to other services
- Present cases in MDT meetings and clinical supervision
- Participate in out-of-hours assessments (if applicable)
- Develop skills in report writing and documentation
- Gain experience in the application of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Support the management of psychiatric emergencies

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry to join the East Sussex Division providing psychiatric and physical healthcare to deliver high-quality, person-centred care to Adults in a Neighbourhood Mental Health Team.
This is a developmental post suitable for doctors with experience working in Psychiatry who are seeking further experience in community psychiatry. The post holder will work under supervision. The post would suit someone who has a background in working in Psychiatry, ideally having completed Core Training or with equivalent experience. This post would be suitable for someone who wants to spend time in a non-training position to develop their skills in medical education and work on their portfolio before applying for a Higher Specialty training post. This role would also be open to SAS grade doctors considering applying for Higher Specialty Training or gathering evidence for CESR.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed Foundation Years 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
- Completion of Psychiatric Core Training (or equivalent experience)
- Section 12 approval (or can evidence meets criteria to apply)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
- Appropriate knowledge of core medical care, psychotherapy, psychology and neuroscience
- Capacity to prioritise clinical need
- Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrates knowledge of evidence informed practice
- Capacity to critically appraise research in psychiatry
