Director of Medical Education

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Come and join us

We're looking for people who share our values (compassion, accountability and optimism) to help us provide high quality care to the patients, carers, families and local communities we serve. We specialise in providing NHS mental health and learning disability services.

So what can we offer you in return?

We're an organisation which puts people first. We'll do everything possible to help you feel respected, valued and included. We'll help you learn, acquire new skills and gain further experience to support your career development. And we'll provide the opportunity for you to bring your fresh ideas to work about how we can do things differently and continue improving.

You will also be joining a health and care system committed to working together to do the best we can for the communities we serve. Above all, at Sussex Partnership you'll have the chance to make a difference to the lives of the patients, carers and families across our communities.

As a Trust we are committed in making a difference. Your development is important to us, so don't forget to ask us during interview what opportunities we can offer. We can offer fully funded lifelong learning opportunities such as an apprenticeship from GCSE to Masters level.

If you like the sound of that, then come and join our team.

Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and energetic leader to take on the role of Director of Medical Education at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. This pivotal position offers the opportunity to shape and enhance the educational experience of medical learners across the organisation.

Working closely with senior leaders including the Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director for Workforce, and regional partners such as HEE KSS, the Director will foster a culture of excellence in medical education.

The role also involves a commitment to staying abreast of innovations in healthcare education. This is a chance to make a lasting impact on the future of medical training within a supportive and forward-thinking Trust environment.

Main duties of the job

The Director of Medical Education (DME) plays a pivotal leadership role in shaping the quality and direction of medical education across the Trust.

This includes strategic oversight of postgraduate and undergraduate training, ensuring a high-quality learning environment, and fostering innovation in educational delivery.

The DME is responsible for governance, quality assurance, and the effective use of educational funding, while also supporting faculty development and supervision structures.

Key duties involve coordinating induction and support for medical learners, managing responses to external educational reviews, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders such as Health Education England, the GMC, Royal Colleges, and universities.

The role also champions multi-professional education and continuous professional development, contributing to a culture of excellence and inclusivity in medical training.

Working for our organisation

We provide NHS care and treatment to children, young people, adults and older people who have mental health problems, learning disabilities or neurodiversity needs.

As well as being a provider of services across Sussex we also commission specialist beds. Working with NHS and independent sector healthcare organisations across the South-East we are the lead provider in three Provider Collaboratives. These cover adult eating disorders, secure care and children and young people inpatient services.

Our services are rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission and 'outstanding' for caring. We work closely with other health and care partners to provide the best possible care to our local populations. We have strengths in innovation, including our work in the field of research and development.
