Job overview
This General Paediatric consultant post combines acute general Paediatric, Neonatal and outpatient work.
The post contributes to the resident on call tier 2 and non-resident tier 3 on call cover.
The post-holder will join a department of established consultants contributing to a well-embedded consultant of the week system. The team have a variety of complimentary special interests. There is close integration between the St Richards and Worthing sites through a range of joint educational and governance and following the merger with Brighton increasing cross site integration.

Main duties of the job
- Consultant of the week. Monday – Friday, 09:00 -17:00, with a frequency of 1:11 weeks. The Consultant will lead the multidisciplinary team to provide care for General Paediatric inpatients on Bluefin ward, the CYPDU, and on the level 1 Neonatal unit. The Consultant will carry the crash bleep and attend medical emergencies within the Paediatric & Neonatal wards, labour ward and ED as required.
- Resident on Call working. The post holder will work a total of 26 tier 2 resident night shifts per year on week day Monday/Tuesday nights, with the remainder of that week as off days. These shifts are supported by a resident tier 1 doctor and a non-resident consultant on call.
- Undertake General Paediatric outpatient clinics. Face to face clinics run for 3 hours with the remaining hour left for clinic related admin.
- CYPDU support. The post holder will provide senior cover to the children’s assessment unit. This will include providing senior review & decision making. This also provides an opportunity for bedside teaching of junior doctors and medical students. .
On Call Commitment: The post holder will work the equivalent of a 50% FTE slot on the non-resident on call rota. This currently equates to 1:16 for weekdays Monday to Friday and 1:10 for weekends, category A immediate return, and currently attracts 0.8 PA for predictable on call plus 3% on call supplement.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Basic medical degree
- • MRCPCH or appropriate specialist qualification
- • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. • If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatrics or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. • If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
