Job overview

The successful applicant will act as a senior educator (GP02) for Assessments. They will provide additional resources and expertise to support the Associate Dean for Assessments. They will be available to deputise for the AD when necessary as well as support the preparation for ARCP process, pre-screening and quality assurance of panel decisions and any subsequent appeals.

The GP02 Assessments role will advise and assist the assessments team regarding the process of GP training assessments to enable a quality assured process of assessment of competence progression. They will feed into the pre-screening process as well as the ARCP process on the day.

The GP02 Assessments will also attend when appropriate meetings of the Assessment Group with in the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education and the RCGP GPSA in order to ensure that there is learning from best practice.

The GP02 Assessments will contribute to the GP senior leadership team of Associate Deans, Area Directors and GP02s.

Main duties of the job

The following list outlines the main areas of responsibility but is not exhaustive and will be agreed with the appropriate line manager: 

  • Works alongside the Assessments Team to ensure all doctors into GP Training for the West Midlands have an appropriate quality assured assessment of progression.
  • Provide support to local and national GP assessments processes attending relevant meetings on behalf of the West Midlands GP School
  • Work with the Programmes team to help ensure that there is appropriate information on the portfolio to enable the Assessment to proceed.
  • Provide training and support to GP trainers, clinical supervisors and other members of the training practice team regarding the assessment process.
  • Provide any additional support for the GP School in line with the responsibilities of a senior educator. This may include involvement in ARCPs, involvement in Appeals and Investigations as well as any additional activities.
  • Keep up to date with national and local policies in relation to GP training and the assessment process.
  • Support and represent the GP School as required with any additional activities including Quality Assurance Visits especially in situations where other ADs may be compromised.

Encourage and support the faculty development of trainees/trainers/TPDs/ADs 

Working for our organisation

·        Working with teams to facilitate induction of GP Registrars, undertake 1:1 conversations with new starters, providing additional support for international doctors or those new to the NHS.

·        Working with GP practices and other education providers to ensure that balanced and quality rotations are available to GP Registrars

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Medical or Dental Practitioner with a current licence to practise or hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (or equivalent) in Public Health (for roles in School of Public Health).
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty or professional association relevant to the advertised role’s Specialty
  • Applicants must be in current NHS clinical practice (or similar setting), or within 2 years of ceasing clinical practice, whilst in this post
  • Applicants, regardless of professional background, must have a track record of professionalism in line with the principles set out in Good Medical Practice and compatible with appointment in a senior clinical educator role.
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development.
  • Active involvement in, and up to date with, NHS appraisal processes.
  • Applicants who are GPs are normally required to be on the National Performer’s List (unless they are solely undertaking an educational management role).
Desirable criteria
  • Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or Master’s in education.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good working knowledge of the NHS, its structures and processes.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
  • Experience of working with learners and doctors in training in an educational context.
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership including across multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, National Institute for Health Research and academic training, NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
Desirable criteria
  • Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education
  • Previous experience in the recruitment and selection of doctors / learners to educational programmes.
  • Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education
  • Understanding of current health, social care and education policy
  • An understanding of healthcare/multi-professional workforce matters
