Employer heading
Genomics Education Programme Development Lead
NHS AfC: Band 8a
Our Organisation
We share the core values set out in the NHS Constitution, which all colleagues are expected to demonstrate.
We support you to work in a way that is best for the NHS, our patients and you and your colleagues. Talk to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement, whether that’s a job share, part time, hybrid working or another flexible pattern.
Job overview
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with a passion for genomics education, training and workforce development to join the Genomics Education Programme (GEP).
The GEP is the national team responsible for shaping education in genomics across England. The GEP is part of the Workforce, Training and Education directorate within NHS England, which provides leadership for the education and training system.
The Workforce, Training and Education directorate ensures that the workforce has the right skills, behaviours and training, and is available in the right numbers, to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and drive improvements through supporting healthcare providers and clinicians to take greater responsibility for planning and commissioning education and training.
Main duties of the job
This post provides an exciting opportunity to use your specific education and training expertise to help our innovative team by designing and developing the content of bespoke educational resources, as well as taking the lead on key curriculum and competency framework development work for the specialist genomic and general workforce.
Using your knowledge of genomics, you will work in partnership with subject matter experts and contribute to the development of high-quality educational resources across a range of formats, including multimedia resources, e-learning courses, web pages and articles.
Using your knowledge of education and evaluation theory, you will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of educational initiatives you are involved in and report these findings, make recommendations for changes when required, as well as contribute to GEP resources, including GeNotes.
You will build professional and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, subject matter experts, professional bodies, and other groups, ensuring the successful design, development and delivery of educational resources that meet audience needs and the goals of the GEP.
Working for our organisation
NHS England has a wide range of statutory functions, responsibilities and regulatory powers. These are focused on supporting the wider NHS to deliver high quality care, as well as doing those things that are best done once for the whole NHS.
Our staff bring expertise across clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cyber security, software engineering, education, and commercial specialisms — enabling us to design and deliver high-quality NHS services.
In March 2025, the Government announced that NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care will increasingly merge functions, ultimately leading to NHS England being fully integrated into the department.
If you currently work within the NHS and if successful at interview, we will initiate an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). This retrieves key data from your current or previous NHS employer to support onboarding, including competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave entitlement. You may opt out at any stage of the process.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in our offices.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Essential criteria the applicant must meet to apply for the role:
Able to identify the strategic priorities and conduct needs assessments for education and training and develop a plan to meet the business objectives of the GEP relating to genomics education and training.
Experience of delivering a range of education and training programmes to a variety of stakeholders including academic audiences.
Experienced in assessing instructional effectiveness and summarising evaluation reports determining the impact of education and training on recipients skills and knowledge.
Use of accepted education principles and track new training methods and techniques.
Experienced in creating and developing strong networks and appropriate partnerships across a range of internal and external stakeholders and promote the viability and reputation of the GEP.
