The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities to join our senior leadership team. This is a key strategic role, supporting the delivery of safe, sustainable, and high-performing estates and facilities services across the Trust.

A major focus of this role will be supporting the delivery of the £65 million capital redevelopment of Lynfield Mount Hospital—a transformational programme that will modernise our inpatient mental health facilities, enhance therapeutic environments, and support the delivery of outstanding care for future generations.

You will work closely with the Director of Finance, Contracting & Estates and other senior colleagues to ensure our estate is fit for purpose, compliant, and aligned with the Trust’s clinical and strategic ambitions.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities
• Support strategic planning and operational delivery of the Trust’s estates and facilities services.
• Lead on capital programmes, property management, and lifecycle planning—including redevelopment of Lynfield Mount Hospital.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety, fire safety, and environmental regulations.
• Drive sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives in line with NHS Net Zero targets.
• Manage outsourced contracts and in-house services, ensuring value for money and high performance.
• Provide expert advice to senior leaders and contribute to Board-level reporting.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and staff engagement.

About You
We’re looking for a confident and capable leader with:
• Significant experience in estates and facilities management, ideally within the NHS or a complex public sector organisation.
• Strong knowledge of healthcare estates, capital planning, and statutory compliance.
• Experience in delivering major capital programmes, ideally in a healthcare setting.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• A commitment to sustainability, inclusion, and service excellence.

Essential criteria
  • Substantial senior leadership experience in estates and facilities management within a large, complex organisation (ideally healthcare or public sector).
  • Proven track record of strategic estates planning, capital programme management and delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of managing compliance with statutory, regulatory and health & safety standards.
  • Demonstrable experience of financial and resource management of multi-million-pound budgets.
  • Evidence of leading organisational change and service improvement.
  • Experience of working at Senior Leadership, Board or Executive level and influencing strategic decision-making.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading on sustainability and Net Zero Carbon strategies.
  • Experience in a mental health or community health care setting.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. estates management, engineering, facilities management, construction) or equivalent experience.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, IHEEM, CIBSE, IWFM).
  • Evidence of ongoing professional and leadership development.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc/MBA) or equivalent senior management training.

Training

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of formal leadership and management training (for example NHS Leadership Academy, ILM Level 7, or equivalent).
  • Up-to-date training in statutory and regulatory compliance areas relevant to healthcare estates and facilities (e.g. Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), Health Building Notes (HBNs), fire safety, water safety/Legionella, asbestos management).
  • Health & Safety qualification such as NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) portfolio demonstrating ongoing technical and leadership learning.
Desirable criteria
  • Project management training/qualification such as PRINCE2 Practitioner or APM.
  • Training in business continuity or emergency preparedness.
  • Formal training in change management or service improvement methodologies.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of estates & facilities governance, compliance, and risk management frameworks.
  • In-depth knowledge of NHS estates and facilities guidance, including Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health Building Notes (HBNs) and duties of the Designated Person.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory and regulatory compliance, including health & safety, fire safety, Legionella, asbestos and environmental legislation.
  • Strong understanding of workforce leadership, talent development and succession planning.
