Due to an expanding service an exciting opportunity has arisen within the Bradford & Airedale Bowel Cancer Screening Centre for a Specialist
Screening Practitioner (SSP). The Centre is based at Bradford Royal Infirmary but the Practitioner will work across both Bradford and Airedale hospital Trusts.

The Centre offers bowel screening across the areas of Bradford, Airedale and Wharfedale.

The post holder will work autonomously to provide the highest standard of care and support for patients participating in the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Main duties of the job

The role is varied and includes:

Pre-assessing patients in clinic;
Counselling for individuals who have tested positive for FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) as part of the bowel screening programme;
Attend colonoscopy procedures, entering data live into the National Bowel Cancer Screening System;
Inform patient of their results which may include cancer diagnosis.
Post holders will have responsibility for assessing, informing and supporting individuals throughout the screening pathway.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Applicants must be a registered health care professional (RN level 1) with a health related degree / working towards, or equivalent level of experience. The post-holder will have the ability to communicate sensitive and complex information, and have excellent IT and presentation skills.

The role is varied and includes providing clinics, assessment, and counselling for individuals who have tested positive for a Faecal Immunochemical Test as part of the bowel screening programme. The post holder will attend colonoscopy procedures entering data live into the National Bowel Cancer Screening System. The specialist screening practitioner will inform the patient of their results which may include cancer a diagnosis. Post holders will have responsibility for assessing, informing, guiding and supporting individuals throughout the screening pathway.


The post holder will be able to demonstrate significant experience and professional development, and the successful candidate will be required to attend and successfully pass a Certificate in Professional Development through Liverpool John Moore’s University (LJMU), which is accredited by the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.


The LJMU course will be fully funded by the trust following probationary period, if you were to resign from the post within two years of passing this
course, you would be required to refund the cost in line with the Trust’s Study Leave policy.


Previous experience of working in screening, colorectal, gastroenterology, cancer or health promotion is desirable but not essential.

  • Experience of caseload assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care demonstrating knowledge of specific patient needs
Desirable criteria
  • Significant post registration experience
  • Experience of working in an MDT and across organisational and professional boundaries
  • Experience of participating in clinical audit
  • Experience in policy development
  • Experience of gastro intestinal disease eg endoscopy, surgery or treatment of GI cancers

  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS national targets and priorities, particularly in relation to screening and cancer services

  • Knowledge and understanding of application of relevant National Guidance both general and specialty related e.g. National Bowel Cancer Screening Frameworks, NICE etc
  • Experience working in colorectal/gastroenterology/cancer/health promotion
  • Recruitment and Selection, appraisal and other relevant HR/People management training
  • Appropriate professional development training
  • Knowledge of change management processes

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered professional qualification: Registered Nurse level 1
  • Nursing or Health related degree
  • Evidence of on-going professional development – ENB courses, revalidation etc
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification ENB998 or 6590 or other relevant teaching qualification, e.g. SLIP or working towards*.
  • Post registration qualification in relevant specialty
  • Counselling qualification
