There is an exciting opportunity to join the friendly and supportive radiation physics team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The ideal candidate would hold certification for RPA and MPE in Diagnostic Imaging. The team provides diagnostic radiology physics services and radiation safety advice and support to all users of ionising radiation in the Trust and some external customers.  There is a wide range of modern imaging equipment, including interventional rooms, mammography systems and CT scanners There are ample opportunities for exciting projects working in collaboration with clinical colleagues. The aim of this post is to provide closer MPE / RPA working with the clinical departments and being more integrated into the clinical teams.  You will also work with the site leadership teams on the site radiation protection programme.

You must be registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist and have MPE certification. RPA certificate of competence is required – candidates without the relevant certifications who have  the ability to submit RPA applications within 6 months may be considered at a lower grade

Main duties of the job

Be a certificated RPA and MPE for diagnostic imaging-giving expert advice in these roles as per requirements on the IRR and IR(ME)R legislation

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • perform & report physics QC & safety tests for DR & CR radiographic equipment
  • perform & report physics QC & safety tests for fluoroscopy x-ray sets.
  • perform & report physics QC & safety tests for CT scanners.
  • perform & report physics QC & safety tests for mammography x-ray sets.
  • advise x-ray operators on QA & Radiation Protection queries.
  • give formal RPA level advice on x-ray room design
  • give MPE advice re research projects involving medical exposures.
  • analyse & report staff personal dosimetry data
  • investigate & notify appropriate authorities about radiation incidents
  • Perform & report patient dose surveys.
  • Give face to face radiation safety training
  • Advice employers re Radon risks & monitoring in the workplace.
  • Supervise, direct and check physics safety & QC work of other staff

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post HCPC registration experience as a Clinical Scientist working as a Clinical Scientist in a Radiation Physics (Diagnostic Imaging) encompassing a wide range of procedures and equipment
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience to meet criteria to be appointed Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic Imaging
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience to meet criteria to be appointed Radioactive Protection Adviser and successfully give advice where appropriate
  • Experience leading a team and negotiating with groups when the subject matter may be contentious or emotional
  • Experience using specialist testing equipment for quality assurance and performance of Diagnostic Imaging equipment and giving advice regarding this.
  • Experience in counselling staff on precautions to be taken to optimise radiation doses to staff and patients
  • Experience of managing and working within quality management systems
  • Experience teaching to fellow professionals, scientists, doctors, nurses radiographers etc
  • Experience auditing compliance with UK radiation legislation
  • Experience of applying for appropriate licenses
  • Experience of regularly reporting to a Radiation Protection Committee
  • Experience advising CQC notification of a significant accidental or unintended exposure.

Qualifications

  • BSc (hons) in Physics or equivalent
  • MSc in physics, medical physics or equivalent.
  • HCPC Clinical Scientist registration - specialising in radiation physics
  • A current Medical Physics Expert (MPE) certificate from RPA2000.
  • Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
  • A current Radiation Protection Adviser certificate from RPA2000.
  • Applicants with lower qualifications may be considered for a lower grade appointment.
