Job overview

We wish to appoint a Clinical Fellow (ST3+ equivalent) in Plastic Surgery.

This post is primarily based at Bradford Royal Infirmary however there will be travel to St Luke’s Hospital and Westcliffe Health Centre as required.
The job will cover ward, out-patients and theatre duties. The successful candidate will be exposed to trauma as well as elective plastic surgery procedures inclusive of Paediatric Plastic Surgery procedures. The department deals with elective and acute hand and lower limb pathology, facial soft tissue injury , free tissue transfer  for head and neck and breast reconstruction and works closely with the department of dermatology in the provision of skin cancer care. 

The successful candidate will take part in the 24 hour on-call rota.   A standard working week is 40 hours. The post attracts additional supplements for working on the out of hours rota.  

Training, educational and research opportunities are available to develop the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Fellow will share the assessment and management of inpatient care of all Plastic Surgery patients in Bradford Royal Infirmary.
In practice and in the interests of their training all junior staff are expected to have a working involvement in the management of all Inpatients. The Fellow will attend all Consultant and Specialty Registrar ward rounds and manage emergencies when on call. The Fellow will be on the Registrar out of hours rota. 

The Registrar is encouraged to attend major operating lists each week.  Opportunities are provided to operate under Consultant/Specialty Registrar supervision or independently, depending on experience.

The post holder accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with colleagues, both Senior and Junior.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job will cover ward, out-patients and theatre duties including an out of hour’s on-call. The post is educationally sound and well supported with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in Plastic Surgery. Where possible, candidates will be encouraged to attend meetings and courses. Candidates will be assigned an educational supervisor and expected to complete logbooks and ISCP etc. There are opportunities in research, audit and quality improvement projects. The post holders Supervising Consultant will be allocated upon job commencement.

Learning Objectives:

The successful applicant will be exposed to elective and emergency plastic surgery patients. He/she will gain experience in how to approach clinical situations in plastic surgery starting from the initial consultation, making the diagnosis, to clerking and preparing the patients for theatre, post-operative management, and short, medium and long term follow-up in outpatient clinics. Experience will be gained in handling of tissue and managing wounds as well as performing basic plastic surgical procedures. There will be exposure to the team approach within the specialty as well working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This will include attending specialist clinics, assisting in theatre, and liaising with other specialties.

Clinical experience:

The post provides good experience in management of wounds, tissue handling, suturing techniques, and excision of benign and malignant skin lesions. The post also provides exposure paediatric and adult plastic surgery emergencies including hand injuries, facial trauma and skin cancer. The successful candidate should have a logbook and portfolio which demonstrates their previous experience commensurate with the skills required to practice at this level.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of ST2 / CT2 competencies in the specialty at time of application
  • Specialty specific requirements eg MRCS
