We are looking for an organised, motivated and enthusiastic Research Fellow to be part of an initiative which will have real impact for families.

 

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Better Start Bradford programme (BSB, http://www.betterstartbradford.org.uk) commissioned multiple early years preventative interventions for young families between 2015 and 2025. Born in Bradford’s Better Start (BiBBS; https://borninbradford.nhs.uk/what-we-do/studies/bibbs/), the world’s first interventional birth cohort, was designed to provide efficient evaluation of these interventions and between 2016 and 2024 recruited over 5000 families from ethnically diverse backgrounds living in areas of high disadvantage. From 2025 to 2028 The National Lottery Community Fund have provided additional funding to undertake longer-term effectiveness evaluations to provide robust evidence of what works to improve children’s outcomes.

Main duties of the job

This post will work alongside senior researchers in Born in Bradford and the University of York and have a key role in delivering these evaluations. The post holder will co-ordinate research projects and undertake data cleaning and quantitative statistical analyses as well as contributing to dissemination and engagement activities.

 You will have knowledge of applied health research with experience in quantitative research methods and analysis.

The post is advertised as full time (37.5 hours a week) although part time working will be considered (minimum of 30 hours a week). The post is fixed term until 31st March 2028.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in a public health, community health or health services research area
  • Experience of collecting and analysing quantitative data
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
  • Experience of obtaining NHS or university ethical approval for research
  • Experience of writing up research findings for internal and external reports
  • Experience of undertaking literature reviews
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of designing quantitative evaluations
  • Experience of working with children and families in a research context
  • Experience of working with diverse ethnic and social communities
  • Peer reviewed publication track record

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Proven record of ability to manage time, prioritise workload and complete tasks within a set timescale
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Understanding of Equality & Diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Understanding of ethical issues in conducting research
  • Knowledge of health inequalities, ethnicity and health, maternal and child health
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the Bradford public health context
  • Evidence of continued professional/ educational development

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First degree in a health related subject, sociology, social science, psychology or anthropology.
  • *Post graduate diploma or Masters degree in health research, social research, public health or an allied subject
Desirable criteria
  • PhD in any of the following: public health, applied health research, medical sociology, health psychology, medical anthropology or a health related subject
