Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow in Stroke Medicine to join our dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team here at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

This is a 1year fixed term position and an excellent opportunity for a doctor with an interest in stroke care to gain further experience in a busy and well-established stroke service.

 

Main duties of the job

The main duties include day to day care of in-patients on the wards, clerking, planning investigations and management, attendance at outpatient’s clinics and communication with colleagues in general practice.

The post holder will participate in the assessment and management of patients who are admitted to stroke medicine wards.  They will also be expected to provide support to junior medical staff, advanced practitioners and the wider Multidisciplinary Team working on the unit.

Alongside the clinical work the post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to development of the stroke medicine service. They will be able to take a leadership role driving changes in the service as it develops to be able to deliver high quality care which meets the standards set out by the Royal College of Physicians. This will be under the supervision of the Clinical Director of Urgent and Emergency Care CSU and the Stroke Clinical Lead.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality day-to-day care for in-patients on the stroke wards.
  • Undertake clerking of new admissions, including comprehensive history taking, examination, and formulation of management plans.
  • Plan and coordinate investigations and ongoing management in collaboration with the wider clinical team.
  • Attend and contribute to outpatient stroke and TIA clinics.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues across primary and secondary care, including general practitioners.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and ward rounds.
  • Support junior medical staff and contribute to teaching and supervision as appropriate.
  • Engage in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of completing a period of approved training in Acute/General Medicine
  • Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practice safely Commitment for managing professional development
  • Clinical governance / audit experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the specialty beyond ST3 or equivalent

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to working co-operatively and collaboratively with other health professionals and organisations
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Acute care safe – up to date ALS
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to perform the requirements of the post
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics
Desirable criteria
  • Multilingual
  • Interest in teaching and management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in management of patient care in stroke medicine
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
  • Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.
Desirable criteria
  • Training in delivery of educational programmes.
  • Understanding of the role of research in the health service and ability to critically analyse research findings

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) or equivalent
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
