Consultant Stroke Physician

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Stroke Medicine at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 10PA replacement post to support the stroke service.

The opportunity is to play a key role in the delivery and future development of the service.

Stroke is a busy, thriving department which offers a comprehensive stroke service including a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit which takes patients from Bradford and Airedale.  You will be joining the service at a particularly exciting time, with the recent opening of a dedicated stroke rehabilitation unit and the expansion of the stroke response team both contributing to dynamic and progressive service.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the usual clinical activities of the department which will include outpatient clinics, MDT attendance and participating in the ward Consultant rota. The consultant will provide continuing responsibility for patients in their clinics and in partnership with colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • To help provide a consultant-led comprehensive acute stroke service together with consultant colleagues, including early liaison with A&E, supporting thrombolysis and working closely with the stroke co-ordinator in recognising stroke and stroke mimics early.
  • To participate in on call rotas as detailed above.
  • Contribute to the TIA service by assisting in provision of a daily TIA clinic (including weekends) and enabling follow up of all patients at one month (thereby ensuring best practice tariff for TIA).
  • To support the lead clinician for stroke in furthering service developments.
  • To provide support for stroke clinical governance. Participate in clinical guidelines development, audit and CPD.
  • To aid and facilitate the rapid transfer of stroke patients from BRI to Ward 9 or SLH for rehabilitation
  • Help develop all aspects of stroke services, including training of junior medical and therapy/nursing staff.
  • Help represent the Trust at CCG and Stroke Clinical Advisory Group meetings, and at any other meetings felt appropriate by the Trust or Dept.
