Job overview
The role of Associate Dean (AD) in England has evolved over a number of years, as a result of changes in healthcare education and training, the implementation of revalidation, the emergence of new workforce solutions and the continuing development of the Workforce, Training and Education (WT&E) Directorate of NHS England (NHSE).
The roles of the ADs in NHSE East of England (EoE) have been developed to help support the NHSE EoE Postgraduate Dean (PGD) in embracing corporate, statutory and non-statutory functions, aligning with previous HEE mandates and NHSE’s priorities. The role is focused firmly upon improving patient and learner safety and experience and ensuring effective educational outcomes.
Main duties of the job
To support the Postgraduate Dean, the Associate Deans will work across the spectrum of health and where relevant, social care, within the context of a team, so that the provision of education reflects changing service models. This will deliver an integrated workforce comprising individuals from a spectrum of professional and other backgrounds.
The responsibilities specific to this Associate Dean role encompass but are not limited to ensuring and supporting career and personal development opportunities for SAS & LEDs doctors, development and delivery of CPD, induction for IMGs, developing further and chairing a regional committee(s) for these doctors and implementing and influencing the outcomes of the NHSE ARCP review as they apply to these grades of doctors.
This associate dean post is specifically to support the development of SAS and LED doctors within the EoE, working with regional and national colleagues to provide best practice working and training models, support the development of LED and SAS roles, and link with HoS and DME to develop routes back into training, and local alternatives [CESR pathways]
The Associate Deans are professionally and managerially accountable to the NHSE EoE Postgraduate Dean.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Essential criteria
- Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association and/or regulatory body
- Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development
- Primary clinical healthcare qualification
Desirable criteria
- Educational qualification such as postgraduate certificate diploma or masters in medical education
Experience
Essential criteria
- Considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context
- Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
- Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
Desirable criteria
- Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education
- Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education
- Understanding of current health, social care and education policy
