Job overview

To assist in the provision of the cellular pathology and mortuary service for the trusts hospitals and CCGs.  To rotate on a regular basis through the different sections of the department. To perform cellular pathology laboratory duties as described in standard operating procedures and health and safety procedures. To train new members of staff, be involved with service development through the laboratory and clinical audit. Continuous professional development will be encouraged. You will occasionally be required to cross sites.

Main duties of the job

  • Liaising with other members of staff within the department on a routine basis to ensure safe and efficient daily operation.
  • To take receipt of clinical samples from wards, clinics and GP’s checking the integrity of the sample.
  • To unpack the samples with reference to Health and safety procedures and the minimum data set requirements for labelling the sample and request form.
  • To undertake with reference to departmental Standard Operating Procedures, the preparation of non-gynaecological  specimens.
  • To assist pathologists and BMS staff during specimen dissection.
  • Understand, perform and document daily quality checks on equipment.
  • To undertake BSW duties throughout the cellular pathology and mortuary department as required.
  • Block, slide and card filing, scanning and retrieval on site and across site.

Working for our organisation

Calderdale Royal Hospital is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic person to work full time giving assistance to the scientific & technical staff in the cellular pathology department.

The cellular pathology laboratory prepares samples for histology, non-gynae cytology, and andrology. We also have a mortuary facility at Calderdale and Huddersfield.

The work involves specimen reception, computer entry, and general assistance with routine technical duties throughout the department including the mortuary.

The successful applicant will preferably have an understanding of cellular pathology, basic IT knowledge and experience of work in a pathology department.

There will be a requirement to cross site to Huddersfield.

  • Participate in regular supervision.
  • Attend all mandatory training.
  • Participate annually identifying, developing and agreeing your own development plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.
  • Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunity Policy.
  • Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.
  • Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE A* - C in English and Mathematics and at least one Science subject or equivalent
  • Level 2 RQF qualification such as Level 2 Diploma in Care, NVQ level 2 in Healthcare Science / Health and Social Care or equivalent

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS medical laboratory/pathology environment
  • Knowledge of cellular pathology processes
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience of working in a cellular pathology department
  • Experience of dealing with vulnerable and distressed people

COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS (INCLUDING MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES)
