Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our continuously developing gynaecology oncology nursing team

The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the lead clinic nurse specialist with the continuous improvement of the department, maintaining excellent standards of care that are reflected by patient experience. 

You will work closely with the multi - disciplinary team receiving referrals for any Fast track referrals to supporting patients and their relative with a cancer diagnosis and signpost referrers to more appropriate services if required.

You must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will have a proactive management style, anticipating and dealing with issues constructively within the multidisciplinary team setting.  You must be flexible in your approach to the role and respond appropriately to the demands of an ever-changing fast paced workload, across all sites of the Trust, including the community diagnostic centres

Main duties of the job

 

  • To provide specialist nursing and support care provision for patients with gynaecology cancer, working within the hospital setting. To help develop services to provide a holistic, supportive and co-ordinated service to patients at all stages of the care pathway.

·         as part of the specialist gynaecology specialist team, undertaking the assessment and triage of patients on a fast track pathway, ensuring patients and carers receive high quality care, support and advice.

·         The post holder will be a registered nurse who is motivated and will adhere to the principles of the CHFT four pillars.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional Duties

 

Participate in the planning, delivery and evaluation of multi-professional

education programmes related to gynaecology cancer.

  • Develop and provide training and competencies for all gynaecology cancer.
  • To participate in providing written information on all aspects of gynaecology cancer management for patients.
  • Participate in the supervision and teaching of pre and post registration students, new staff members, junior medical staff, and others wishing to observe the gynaecology oncology service.
  • Provide mentorship and preceptorship as required.

Ensure suitable and effective learning environments for students. Financial Duties

 

To be aware of the Unit budget and Trust goals.

 

3.5              Managing Self

·         Participate in regular supervision and Macmillan reviews.

·         Attend all mandatory training.

·  Participate annually identifying, developing and agreeing your owndevelopment plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.

·       Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.

·   Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunity Policy.

·       Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.

·       Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times.

·       Ensure maintenance of Professional Registration.

 

3.6       Undertake all such reasonable other duties as may be required as part of the role.

  •  To take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintain own portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements.
  • To be responsible for meeting the educational needs of gynaecology patients and their families.
  • To participate in all the relevant needs for peer review.
  • With the lead cancer nurse and the lead clinical nurse specialist, to support the development cancer nursing and supportive care for cancer patients in Calderdale and Huddersfield.
  • To promote continuity along the patient pathway, liaising where appropriate with other care settings and professionals.
  • To be involved in the annual review of all written information available for patients and carers, ensuring these are offered and are accessible at all points of the pathway of care.
  • To attend lead cancer nurse meetings, team briefings and other appropriate local and network meetings as required
  • Promote the use of evidence-based practice.
  • Take part in audit work as required and maintain collection of workload data.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities as appropriate.
  • Contribute towards evaluating the clinical effectiveness of the team.
  • Monitor and ensure standards of care are maintained and that policies/procedures and protocols are adhered to.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records for the purpose of patient review, audit and research according to Trust policies and NMC guidelines.
  • Contribute to the development of nursing research, including where relevant, publishing outcomes.

·         Be aware of equality and diversity agenda and act within its guidance

·         Undertake advanced communication skills training.

 

 

                   Managerial Duties

 Support the Lead nurse /General Manager in developing the Gynaecology oncology management service.  

Actively support the implementation of government directives relating to gynaecology cancer management.

  • Take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensuring incidents and near misses are reported, through promoting a no blame culture.
  • To participate in investigation of incident/complaints when required, including preparing detailed report/letters to complainants.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Knowledge of the management of women’s health Gynaecology cancers and knowledge of investigation of gynaecology cancer and treatments
  • An Understanding of the fast-track referral process and cancer pathway and the faster diagnostic pathway
  • Evidence of MDT working
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding and appreciation of different computerised systems and records, Able to use IT equipment effectively
  • Recent experience in undertaking staff appraisals
  • Recent relevant experience working within a Clinical Specialist Role
  • Knowledge /experience within Oncology nursing
