Job overview

To work as part of the theatre orderly team within operating theatres, to contribute in providing an efficient and effective operating department with high standard of patient care and dignity.

Main duties of the job

  • Assisting in the transfer of patients to and from ward areas
  • Maintaining privacy and dignity throughout
  • Maintaining stock levels
  • Transferring items to and from the theatres including drugs, specimens, equipment, instruments and beds.
  • Attend regular team meetings
  • Undertake all such reasonable other duties as may be required as part of the role
  • Disposal of rubbish and clinical waste within Trust protocols.
  • Collecting blood when required from Path Lab
  • Answer and take telephone messages for surgeons and theatre staff.
  • This role requires moving patients and heavy trays and standing for long periods of time.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist in transfer of patients to and from ward areas maintaining privacy and dignity throughout.
  • Collecting post-operative beds.
  • Collection and organisation of patients luggage and deliver to correct ward areas if required
  • Assist with transfers of patients within the department in accordance with local moving and handling protocols.
  • Cleaning of theatres and other operating department areas
  • Disposal of rubbish and clinical waste in accordance with appropriate policies
  • Acceptance, scanning and sending of sterile instrument trays to and from off-site sterilisation.
  • Handling sterilised trays and returning to appropriate location.
  • Transporting of specimens to relevant location.
  • Moving equipment between departments where necessary
  • Check medical gas cylinders; replace as necessary (following training on cylinder identification).
  • Ordering and maintenance of off-site laundry services
  • Collecting drug orders from pharmacy and transferring them to the relevant staff member, maintaining stock rotation
  • Collecting blood from the blood bank in accordance with Trust Policy

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to undertake any training or development relevant to the role
  • English & Math’s GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) or equivalent OR a pass at pre-employment assessment
Desirable criteria
  • Moving and handling training
  • Infection control training
  • Resuscitation training

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

  • Experience of working in a customer service setting
  • Insight into the roles and responsibilities of the post
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a caring profession
