Job overview

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated State-Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our friendly team in Point of Care as part of the Pathology Department at the CDC-Halifax.

Previous laboratory experience, laboratory quality/quality management system and basic IT skills are required.

Point of Care Testing (POCT) is laboratory testing performed outside the central laboratory and subject to the same level of professional, public and judicial scrutiny as analyses carried out in the laboratory.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and conscientious individual with a strong work ethic. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver what is required to achieve a safe, high quality and effective service whilst continuously striving for improvement.

The Trust serves a population of over 400,000 and is based across both Halifax and Huddersfield. The point of care department is expanding and has many opportunities for growth and development. 

CHFT Point of Care department is currently in the process of preparing for UKAS accreditation in line with CDC and NHS England expectations.

Working for our organisation

Following a period of training and competency assessments the successful candidate will be expected to participate in POCT governance in the CDC at Broad Street and Huddersfield, as well as cross site on all Trust sites such as CRH and HRI.

The successful candidate must be able to be flexible to work weekdays, weekends and bank holidays between the hours of 8am and 8pm.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide specialised and specific diagnostic instructions over the telephone to users of the service, providing explanation of issues where necessary. 
  • To act as primary point of contact for Point of Care when working alone. 
  • Liaise with other members of staff within the department on a routine basis to ensure safe and efficient daily operation. 
  • To be able to plan your own work and that of the department and prioritise urgent issues. 
  • To co-ordinate the work in conjunction with other specialist departments. 
  • Must have good hand eye co-ordination when handling potentially infectious material and when using laboratory/POCT equipment. 
  • To prepare specimens for POCT diagnostic testing. 
  • To supervise and ensure continuity of a wide range of POCT diagnostic tests. 
  • To ensure patient confidentiality 
  • Must be able to do maintenance and basic repairs of the automated analysers/POCT devices. 
  • Implements changes to practice within POCT alongside the Service Manager. 
  • Provide advice and guidance to other staff members working in that area. 
  • Helps formulate SOP’s with the Service Manager/Clinical Lead. 
  • To maintain adequate levels of POCT/Laboratory kits and reagents in the department. 
  • To assist with the training of new Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Science students. 
  • Will be able to act independently within occupational guidelines and make the judgment when it is necessary to refer to their manager. 
  • Work as part of a team within own discipline as well as both within the wider Pathology Laboratories and Trust.

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Accredited Degree in Biomedical Science and a completed registration portfolio
  • State registration with the HCPC
  • IBMS Specialist postgraduate portfolio in a Biomedical Science Speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualifications in a Biomedical Science Speciality.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential criteria
  • Significant recent post registration experience within a Pathology department.
  • Supervision and training of biomedical support workers, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff.
  • Experience of UKAS accreditation
  • Knowledge of all areas of the Pathology department.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in continued professional development.
  • Willingness to take part in providing a service across multiple sites.
  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory accreditation and other quality standards associated with Pathology laboratories.
  • To be able to deal with sensitive data in accordance with departmental and Trust guidelines.
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge base in laboratory practice in Pathology.
  • Ability to run, maintain and fault find on laboratory/POCT equipment.
  • Good IT Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of laboratory and clinical audit
  • To give presentations on results of trials or audit to interested parties in the Trust
