Job overview
The post is for a band 6 Nurse when fully trained, if applicant doesn’t have all essential criteria, it will be a Band 5 training position until completed OTE and BASHH competencies.
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for the client group accessing Sexual Health Services. This will include the assessment and treatment of sexually transmitted infections including the care of patients who are affected and infected by HIV. Inform and advise individuals on all methods of contraception including LARC, regardless of age, gender or sexual orientation and to provide up to date advice and excellent sexual health promotion.
Main duties of the job
· To deliver a high standard of patient care as a Sexual Health Nurse Specialist
· To support, assist and advise patients providing excellence in Sexual Health Promotion.
· Work as an autonomous practitioner at specialist nurse level within latest guidance and best practice.
· Managing self and time to ensure you are physically and mentally well to perform your duties.
To assess, examine, undertake investigations including the skills eg. microscopy and phlebotomy, manage and treat STI's within agreed areas of expanded practice working to Patient Group Directives.
To provide risk assessment for individuals who may identify as high risk and perform the necessary testing required, including the provision of pre and post test discussion for HIV.
To undertake a public health role to the reduction of infection by performing partner notification.
To promote the provision of LARC (long-acting reversible contraception) and to be confident and competent in Implanon and IUD/IUS insertion and removal techniques.
To provide appropriate sexual health provision to young people applying Fraser guidelines and be confident in relation to safeguarding referral policies.
Cervical cytology screening and be aware of the referral process to colposcopy for any abnormal smear results.

We employ more than 6,500 staff who deliver compassionate care from our two main hospitals, Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as well as in community sites, health centres and in patients’ homes. We also are incredibly proud to have almost 150 volunteers here at CHFT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· To deliver a high standard of patient care as a Sexual Health Nurse Specialist

· Managing yourself: taking care of your time and needs, to ensure you are physically and mentally well to perform your duties.
- Responsible for setting up and clearing all clinical areas in accordance to infection control policies.
- To assess, examine, undertake investigations including the skills required by a tier three service eg. microscopy and phlebotomy, manage and treat sexually transmitted infections within agreed areas of expanded practice working to Patient Group Directives.
- To provide risk assessment for individuals who may identify as high risk and perform the necessary testing required, including the provision of pre and post test discussion for HIV.
- To assess individuals who may attend for the provision of Post Exposure Prophylaxis treatment and advise accordingly.
- The ability to deliver positive results such as HIV and Hepatitis and STI results, explaining the diagnosis and implications of this and providing ongoing support.
- To undertake a public health role contributing to the reduction of infection within the community by performing partner notification as per BASHH standards.
- To inform, advise, counsel and teach individuals and couples on all methods of contraception following assessment of clinical choice.
- To promote the provision of LARC (long-acting reversible contraception) and to be confident and competent in Implanon insertion and removal techniques.
- Follow current policies and procedures in relation to contraception and sexual health as indicated according to patient group directions.
- To provide appropriate sexual health provision to young people applying Fraser guidelines and be confident in relation to safeguarding referral policies.
- To perform cervical cytology screening as specified through the National cervical cytology programs and be aware of the referral process to colposcopy for any abnormal smear results.
- To perform pregnancy testing and offer advice re options including referral for termination of pregnancy.
- To provide clinical services taking into account service user diversity including age, race, disability, gender, sexual orientation.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
Essential criteria
- Significant nursing experience within a Sexual Health Service
- Ability to undertake intimate examinations for symptomatic Sexual Health Screening including Microscopy
- To understand the principles of Partner Notification
- In-depth knowledge of the legal framework concerning young people and fraser competency
- To be fully aware of the referral processes regarding safeguarding young people
- Willingness to undertake training for further extended roles
- Maintain awareness of professional and organisational developments
