Job overview

Support the Pharmacy Manager in the provision of a high quality patient focussed dispensary service to CHFT outpatients.  

Main duties of the job

Work independently to a high level of technical competency following departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs) 

 

·       Contribute to the delivery of a quality dispensing service  

·       Perform a final accuracy check on dispensed medicines  

·       Provide leadership to the technical team and act as deputy to Pharmacy Manager 

·       Work collaboratively with pharmacy team members and  other  healthcare professionals 

 

Technical Duties 

·       Maintain competence in all outpatient pharmacy tasks to  support the team  

·       Work as an accredited checking technician in the outpatient   dispensary 

·       Supervise and plan the day to day workload of the outpatient dispensary 

·       Interpret complex prescriptions and calculate doses and  quantities to supply on prescriptions 

·       Contribute to the safe and accurate issue of completed  dispensed prescriptions to patients  

·       Accurately input data, patient and prescription details onto the computer system and assist with the maintenance of  records relating to work and workload statistics 

·       Dispense and maintain records of controlled drugs for outpatients 

·       Ensure competent use of prescription tracking system.  Produce reports to ensure dispensary standards are achieved and maintained as necessary 

·       Follow up prescription queries as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional leadership 

·       Be a positive role model to pharmacy team 

·       Participate in all areas of pharmacy practice within the                      outpatient setting 

·       Participate in the training and supervision of relevant staff groups to ensure their competence 

·       Responsible for problem solving and making judgements                involving a range of situations which may require analysis 

 

Personal and Professional Development 

·       Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) in  accordance with Trust policy and the requirements of the  General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) 

·       Identify own learning needs, and devise a plan for meeting  them 

·       Participate in and contribute towards an annual individual             appraisal, with the dual goals of enhancing performance and        developing a personal development plan 

·       Take responsibility for own development, learning and                      performance; sharing and demonstrating such skills and activities with team members to encourage their performance in similar developmental work 

·       Ensure maintenance of professional registration with GPhC and competence for accuracy checking 

 

Communication 

·       Provide quality customer service to all outpatient Pharmacy  customers including multidisciplinary healthcare  professionals 

·       Provide / receive routine information that may require tact or persuasive skills where there may be difficulties in                        understanding, especially when answering the telephone 

·       Deal effectively with general enquiries and complaints.  Ensure that all communication by the post holder with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals is of a high standard 

·       Liaise with other healthcare professionals to assist in the                continuity of patient care across primary and secondary care sectors 

·       Develop and maintain positive working relationships to                    facilitate an efficient and effective outpatient dispensing  service 

 

General Duties 

·       Work flexibly to support the team and service needs 

·       Deal with conflicting pressures of work and make decisions  to prioritise work when required to do so 

·       Act as one of the department’s fire wardens 

·       Adhere to all policies and procedures for CHS and CHFT 

·       Complete all mandatory training 

·       Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal                Opportunity policy 

·       Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever                      necessary 

·       Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ3 / BTEC in pharmacy service skills (or equivalent)
  • Registered with GPhC as a pharmacy technician
  • Working towards (or eligible to complete) GPhC accredited checking pharmacy technician qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Completed GPhC accredited checking pharmacy technician qualification

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Accredited to do final accuracy check for prescriptions dispensed by other
  • Able to work autonomously, requiring minimal supervision
  • Able to work to set procedures and relevant regulations
  • Work to high standard of accuracy
  • Able to clearly and accurately complete routine documentation
  • Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the technical team
  • Demonstrate computer literacy skills and confidence in the use of Microsoft programs such as Word/Excel/Outlook
  • Knowledge of the principles of stock contro
  • Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the technical team
  • Make judgements how to fulfil urgent orders where there are a range of options

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post qualification pharmacy practice experience
  • Evidence of supervisory experience
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy experience
  • Have participated in clinical audit

  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Able to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by the Company/Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development and academic progression
