Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join our hard working and dedicated Reception team within 
our Emergency Departments at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. We 
have full and part time vacancies available. 
Whether full time or part time, the successful candidates must be able to work our full range of 
shifts, across both of our hospital sites, to cover a 24/7 ad-hoc roster. Unsocial hours worked 
attract an enhanced pay in addition to basic salary. 
Our current shifts are: 
Early: 7am – 3pm
Late: 3pm – 9pm
Night: 9pm-7am
Please note that this shift model is currently under review and subject to change. 
This is a challenging yet rewarding role working as the first point of contact for emergency patients 
coming into our departments. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, compassionate, and 
caring candidates with a positive attitude and a passion for working with and helping people. 
The successful candidates will have a flexible approach to working, proven interpersonal, 
communication, and conflict management skills and be able to provide an excellent patient 
experience. Previous experience working in a patient or customer facing role is essential. Please

Main duties of the job

  • Register patients coming into the A&E department, using the electronic computer system.
  • Ensure that all relevant patient information is taken and recorded accurately.
  • Maintain confidentiality, patient’s privacy and dignity and act in a courteous manner at all times.
  • Escalate any concerns over patients to the relevant clinical staff.
  • Book, reschedule and cancel, where necessary, clinic appointments
  • Deal with telephone enquiries from GP's, patients, relatives, members of the public and other organisations/services.
  • Deal with face to face enquiries from patients and clinical staff within the department
  • To work with the multi-disciplinary team within the department and provide administrative support to people at all levels and contribute in a positive, proactive and professional manner.

This is not an exhaustive list of duties. The post holder is expected to undertake these and any other relevant duties when required.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English and Maths Grade 9-3 (A* -D) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 in a relevant subject

Knowledge, experience & expertise

Essential criteria
  • Previous administration and clerical experience
  • Experience of working within a patient or customer facing role
  • Working experience of computers and data inputting
  • Experienced in working in high pressure environments
  • Good understanding of patient confidentiality and information governance
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Ability to multi-task, work accurately, and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to work well and stay calm under pressure
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, care, and empathy
  • Excellent conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
  • Must be able to work across both hospital sites
  • Must be flexible and able to work the full range of shifts to cover a 24/7 ad-hoc roster
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS Experience
  • Knowledge of NHS IT systems
