Job overview

We are advertising a number of posts as Trust Doctors at the registrar (ST3+) level at The Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. 

 

The posts are intended to provide additional experience in various general surgical specialities to enable progression into a formal NTN for general surgical training.

Although not a recognised training post, there are considerable training and educational opportunities for the successful candidates. There is a comprehensive induction course and regular weekly teaching with the intention that the service commitment, supervision level and educational opportunities will be equivalent to that of our existing trainees.

This is a Full-Time post with basic hours of 40 hours per week, but applicants wishing to work part-time are also encouraged to apply and rotas will be adjusted accordingly, and by negotiation with appointees.

 

Main duties of the job

Speciality registrars will be expected to participate in ward rounds, clinics and operating theatres. The post holder accepts that s/he will also perform duties in on the emergency take and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation where practicable with senior colleagues.

The department is part of a busy district general hospital and performs around 190 emergency laparotomies, 150 elective colorectal resections, over 100 bariatric operations and over 500 laparoscopic cholecystectomies per year and has a busy and active elective breast surgical practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Each post holder will contribute to the formal teaching programme for medical students, nursing and para medical colleagues and junior doctors and will be granted automatic placement into the Department’s Core Training and Higher Training preparation courses to enable intensive preparation for future applications. There are also several management and leadership positions available which will further enhance future applications.

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Applicants must be Registered with the General Medical Council and hold a Licence to Practise
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree

Experience and Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the Surgery specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding current issues within Surgery and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education
