Job overview
The Maxillofacial Unit at HRI provides a range of oral and maxillofacial surgical operations that are carried out on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. These include surgical extractions, removal of impacted teeth, and intraoral and facial soft tissue procedures.
The Maxillofacial Consultants carry out procedures for the removal and reconstruction of head and neck skin malignancies and nasoendoscope diagnostics.
It is essential for the post holder to have obtained the National Examining Board Qualification for Dental Nurses or a certificate of proficiency awarded by a dental hospital and follow their code of ethics. To be registered with the General Dental Council and carry out all duties within the trust policy framework under the supervision of the consultants.
Main duties of the job
Main duties will include:
- Operational management to ensure efficient day to day running of the department, clinics, and surgery.
- Prepare theatre and surgical trays for operations carried out under local anaesthetic/sedation, following aseptic technique in accordance with Trust guidelines.
· · Assisting medical/surgical team and acting as a theatre/scrub nurse, which requires a high level of concentration and physical effort. You will be required to stand in a restricted position for long periods of time, especially during complex cases.
· correct handling, labelling and dispatch of laboratory/pathology specimens.
· Professional Duties
· It is essential for the post holder to have obtained the National Examining Board Qualification for Dental Nurses or a certificate of Proficiency awarded by a Dental Hospital,, and follow their code of ethics.
- To be registered with the General Dental Council
- Carry out all duties within the Trust policy framework under the supervision of the Consultant/Medical team. Report any difficulties encountered.
- Training in Basic / Advanced Life Support

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main duties will include:

· · Give pre- and post-operative instructions, inform of the treatment plan, and assess medical fitness for general anaesthesia using the maxillofacial care pathway.
·
- Preparation of surgeries for clinical work. Preparation of instrumentation and tracking of surgical equipment. Maintain high standards of cross-infection control.
· Ensure correct handling, labelling and dispatch of laboratory/pathology specimens.
· Professional Duties
· It is essential for the post holder to have obtained the National Examining Board Qualification for Dental Nurses or a certificate of Proficiency awarded by a Dental Hospital,, and follow their code of ethics.
- To be registered with the General Dental Council
- Carry out all duties within the Trust policy framework under the supervision of the Consultant/Medical team. Report any difficulties encountered.
- Training in Basic / Advanced Life Support
- Be aware of responsibility under the Health & Safety Legislation. Report any practice or occurrence, which may be detrimental to well-being of patients, visitors or staff.
- Attend statutory Trust Policy training annually.
- Be aware of the Complaints Policy and report appropriately any untoward occurrence in relation to this.
- Follow clinical risk incident procedure and reporting systems.

Essential criteria
- Possession of the Certificate of the Examining Board for Dental Nurses
- Must be registered with the General Dental Council
- Substantial experience in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/Orthodontics.
Desirable criteria
- Post qualifications in sedation
- Post qualifications in radiography
