Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder working alongside the exsisting quality manager is responsible for the management, development and maintenance of the QMS for all departemtns within Pathology.

Acting as a member of the senior management team the post holder will be required to work autonomously to develop a QMS and all associated policies to support all acreditation and regulatory requirements across all pathology disciiplines.

To be responsible for the training and development and continual assessment of all staff both clinical and managerial in the QMS relevant to their individual scopes of practice.

To provide leadership, specialist advice and direction to all pathology and Trust staff on matters relating to accreditation, governance, and quality assurance within Pathology on such quality initiaitves as are deemed necessary to achieve and maintain compliance with UKAS, relevant ISO. MHRA Blood Safety and Quality Regulations and Human Tissue Act requirements.

Qualifcaitons/Training

Essential criteria

HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist
Relevant Master’s Degree or Higher Specialist Diploma or equivalent
Quality Management Qualification (IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice – Quality Management or equivalent)
Leadership/management qualification or relevant experience

Desirable criteria

Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science Quality Management Qualification (IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice – Quality Management or equivalent)
Chartered Scientist Status (CSci)

Knowledge, Experience & Expertise

Essential criteria

Extensive experience working as a senior scientist in Pathology
Experience in Quality Management System development and continual improvement
Experience in Accreditation assessments and Regulatory inspection visits across Pathology Disciplines
Experience of development and delivery of education & training strategies and programmes.
Demonstrable experience in writing complex technical reports for example management reviews.
Completed audit training.
Completed training for trainers
Able to use a variety of packages to analyse and present data and generate reports (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)
Expert knowledge of ISO 15189
Working knowledge of closely related ISO standards such as 17043 and 17025
Working knowledge of COSHH regulations and approved code of practice
Change Control and Validation Systems
Risk assessment and risk management

Desirable criteria

Advanced root cause methodologies
Working knowledge of other Health and Safety legislation
Working knowledge of the UK guidelines for the Blood Transfusion Services in the UK (Red Book)

Communication and Relationships (including Management Responsibilities)

Essential criteria

Ability to work autonomously and effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
Ability to maintain concentration for long periods for example during external audits and inspections.
Ability to sit or standing in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working day whilst auditing, writing reports or use of microscopes for example
Ability to write extensive reports and executive summaries for the understanding of wide audiences.
Strong influencing and leadership skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills – able to form working relationships at all levels.
Ability to use accurate fine measurement devices such as microscopes, graticules callipers and an ability to undertake in-house calibrations and performance checks.

The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and will recover the cost (Enhanced £54.40, Standard £26.40 or Basic £26.40) from your salary when you commence in post (including Internal staff). You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £16 cost per year. This is a condition of your employment.
